Cloudy to partly cloudy with a chance of rain and a few thundershowers today diminishing tonight. Generally fair Wednesday with highs near 80 and Tonight's lows in the upper 50s. Winds northerly 5 to 10 mph. Rain probability 50 percent today and 20 tonight.
Ambassador Andrew Young backs mandatory U N sanctions but says the Carter administration has not decided. He indicates a possible compromise resolution short of a binding arms embargo and aims to bridge East and West amid shifts since last March.
The Monroe Redevelopment Agency voted to limit the Community Development Rehabilitation Grant Program to repairs and basic structure restoration and to disallow funds for appliances and household items. Mayor W H Jack Howard criticized the program as too costly and warned the city could drop it if federal rules required reinstatement of the denied extras.
A Louisiana jury acquitted ten union members of criminal conspiracy and aggravated damage at the Jupiter Chemical Co construction site attack on January 15, 1976. One worker died in the AFL-CIO led clash with an independent union. Wilbur LeLeux Jr. was acquitted in a separate murder case.
Mr and Mrs D W Richie of 101 Tennessee St Monroe celebrate 54 years of marriage. They wed in Swartz in 1923 after running off. A son Jene Richie and daughter Mrs Melba Moore of Monroe attend with 11 grandchildren and great grandchildren for an evening gathering.
The Monroe Commission moves to introduce a mobile sign ordinance requiring registration within two weeks. Businesses must submit a drawing of sign location and pay a $5 fee. The rule bans placement on public ground or where it blocks rights of way and takes effect after final council approval.
Gas prices fall to 50.9 cents per gallon at Twin Cities convenience stores and independent stations amid an Arab oil embargo era. Seven-Eleven and Lion Station deny loss leader claims, saying they match nearby competition. Full service stations face pressure as customers fill elsewhere and wait on Exxon pricing. Betty Trainor of Mid City Exxon notes impact on sales for oil checks and tires.
E. E. Hodgkins of Monroe LSU district agent for Ouachita Valley Macon Ridge warns a harsh winter may nearly wipe out the local cattle industry across Ouachita Morehouse West Carroll Franklin Richland and Caldwell parishes. He cites low hay supply high costs and prior winter losses as signs that cattle herds are shrinking and many ranchers rely on expensive supplements or sell off herds.
