An official report cites 27 dead and 35 wounded when artillery at Coppacabana fortress opened fire on the German steamer Baden in Rio de Janeiro harbor. Brazilian legation reports 20 dead and 35 injured with unclear German casualty details.

An explosion caused by fire damp at the Maybach colliery near Quierschiete entombed 87 miners. Five were injured and taken from the shaft as rescue parties started immediate efforts at 3 30 p m. Ninety miners descended the shaft, three escaped initially.
Alfred Carstedt a 41 year old Baltimore man is charged with shipping 15 pounds of opium used for smoking to Mobile from New York last month. He is jailed in Mobile county awaiting formal action on a warrant issued in Mobile. Federal officials probe the alleged shipment as a potential major source for the illegal opium trade.
In Jackson Mississippi on October 25 members file in chancery court seeking recovery of 20734190 dollars allegedly used fraudulently by officers of the insolvent Mississippi Farm Bureau Cotton Association in cotton futures dealings. Named defendants include C L Neill president H O Pate secretary treasurer and other officers and directors. The bill says funds came from the sale of association cotton and were due to individual members.
In Chicago on October 25 United Press reports Josiah Mower's wife, suing for divorce, opened his safety deposit box and found four quarts of 33 year old whiskey, 50 wedding rings and bonds worth 50 000 dollars. The wife claimed half the liquor. Mower objected. The judge impounded all four bottles.
Scientists at the University of Hawaii traced yesterday's seismograph fault line to a disturbance center about 3,700 miles away in the direction of Japan. The report from Honolulu dated October 25 notes ongoing analysis of the quake affecting the Pacific region.

Police report a seven year old boy was sacrificed in Barpali Sambalpur district. The body was found in a well at the house of Jadh Sonari, a follower of the village "Wizard." Investigators say animal sacrifice instructions were found. several people were arrested.
W K Henderson of radio KWKH Shreveport Louisiana donated 100 pounds of coffee to needy families in West Frankfort as announced by the Salvation Army on October 25.

A truck owned by the Item Tribune crashed through the grocery store wall after failing to make a corner. Percy Royal the driver and Blaise Clesi and Edmund Evans were seriously injured, with Royal near death. The brick wall collapse caused about 3000 dollars in damage.
Albert Dodson 22 an ex convict was arrested in Detroit for questioning in the murder of 15 year old Alice Toots Collier who disappeared August 2. Her body found yesterday by a hunter in a wooded area on the city outskirts she was strangled.
Mrs. Mary Rosenthal, 53, was arrested in Fort Worth Texas after entering a bank and demanding 4000 dollars and threatening to drop a bottle of nitroglycerin if refused, charged with attempted robbery.

Baton Rouge, Oct. 25 The Louisiana highway commission will advertise bids next week for about 5 million dollars of highway work. The November 25 opening list includes 177.1 miles of projects across 13 concrete paving jobs totaling 111.7 miles in 16 parishes plus 13 other highway projects and six bridges. Chair man O K Allen says the plan kicks off a 3,000 mile paved system aimed to be quick, with the road bond issue pending a November 4 vote.
Emmett Gallie and Ewell Richardson of Windsor Missouri admitted to Kansas City police that they killed Mrs Elizabeth Nieman a 63 year old Windsor widow on October 17 after robbing her of 35 dollars and 82 cents.
