Saigon reports US battlefield deaths near a three year low with 78 Americans killed in action last week while South Vietnamese losses rose to 301. The week saw 684 US wounded and 878 Vietnamese wounded as Viet Cong activity stayed moderate.
Carey S. ONeal Jr. has been assigned to Mather Air Base California for navigator training and earned a commission as a second lieutenant. He is son of Mrs. R A LeMoine of Sterlington Drive and a recent graduate of Officer Training School at Lackland Air Base Texas. He is a Neville High School graduate and holds a BA from Northeast Louisiana State College.
Miss Dianne Bennett daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Bennett of West Monroe will represent Northwestern State College in the state Rodeo Queen's Contest in Baton Rouge in March 1970 with the winner advancing to Las Vegas Nevada for the national competition. Bennett has won titles at the Silver Spur Rodeo Ruston and the West Monroe Riding Club IRA Championship Rodeo.
U S Army Pfc Jesse B Harris 20 of Port Chester New York, captured June 1969 with the 101st Airborne, returns to a landing zone near Da Nang. He arrived at Youngstown base in good condition though malaria and a minor arm wound reported. He is to be treated at Long Binh then sent home after a week to 10 days. Harris’s mother has been notified.
President Nixon asks Congress for a 10 year program to build 300 merchant ships to aid the U S shipping industry. Estimates place cost above 4 billion dollars as subsidies shift from 55 to 35 percent and operating aids continue with revisions. Rep Edward Garmatz backs urgent hearings as 600 of the 955 ships are deemed obsolete.
Laurie weakens from a hurricane to a tropical storm as cool air from a high pressure system shifts southward. The National Hurricane Center cancels Florida warnings. Laurie moves deeper into the Gulf of Mexico with top winds near 70 mph and continued weakening forecast.
Fourth District Judge Jesse S. Heard tossed out a civil suit seeking to enjoin Monroe's October 28 urban renewal referendum. About 25 plaintiffs led by Thomas W.
