Pow Wow at Northeast Louisiana State College Homecoming

Freshmen plan a Pow Wow on the College Union patio to drum up homecoming excitement. They will march in the downtown parade wearing war paint and skirts, and a noon open house at Sandel Library follows events. The Homecoming Queen Shirley Nelson of Bastrop will be crowned with her court, and a dance concludes the festivities.

Whetstone Receives Long Service Honor

Whetstone of Monroe was awarded a long service pin for 35 years with the Bell Telephone Company. Pick Henderson, Louisiana general commercial manager, presented the award at a ceremony marking his dedication to the firm.

Funeral Rites For Dr Harry Lemert In Monroe

Dr Harry Marion Lemert 46 dean of Northeast Louisiana College Fine Arts died of a heart attack Sunday night in a Monroe hospital. Funeral services set for 3 p m today at Mulhearn Funeral Home chapel with Dr W T McFadden officiating. Burial in Hasley Cemetery follows. He was active in the Monroe Rotary Club First Presbyterian Church and the Louisiana Music Teachers Association. He served in World War II and earned degrees from the American Conservatory of Music Vandercook College and University of Texas. He is survived by his wife Louise and daughter Lou both of Monroe and his parents in Union Mills Indiana.

Edgar Perkins Rites Held for Local War Veteran

Funeral services for Edgar Perkins 33 former Monroe resident were held Monday at Robbins Funeral Home Ringgold. He died Saturday of a heart attack. Burial took place at Wright Cemetery Sikes. Perkins was a World War II veteran who served in the Air Force.

Funeral rites for Rear Admiral Mayfield in La Jolla

Funeral services for Rear Admiral Mayfield will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Roskranz Funeral Home chapel in La Jolla California. Burial will follow in La Jolla cemetery. He died at his La Jolla home Tuesday after a long illness. A Ruston native he served as an aide to Admiral Malsey in the South Pacific during World War II. He was 78 and survived by one sister Mrs Wand Frown of St. Joseph and two nieces Mrs William Rodriguez and Mrs Allen Scholars of Monroe.

Funeral services held for Joseph Griffith in Quitman

Joseph B Griffith 62 of Quitman died Tuesday after months long illness. Funeral services were Thursday at Quitman Methodist Church with Rev Tiffman Brown Rev SOW Tallos and Rev Tray Garrett officiating. Interment followed in Quitman Cemetery under Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro direction. Griffith worked for the paper mill at Hodge.

Death of Lenora Jordan 77 Swartz with large local survivors

Lenora Dumas Jordan 77 of Swartz died after a one day illness in a local clinic. She leaves her father Andrew Perkins Bastrop two brothers Dayton Perkins Fort Worth and Carl Perkins Shreveport four sisters Kate White Bastrop Carrie Beaver Pineville Lucille McCarty Dodson Eunice Scroggs Monroe and Lenora Jordan’s two daughters Berta Petagna Monroe and Jack Farmer Swartz two sons Robert Dumas Swartz J V Dumas Jr Houma a sister Emma Thedford Mississippi and several grandchildren Funeral services are set for Thursday at Chatham Baptist Church with interment in Chatham Cemetery under Southern Funeral Home Janesboro first option for arrangements. Additional survivors include son Clifford Moore Little Rock and daughters Seth May West Monroe Thelma Bolton Bastrop sister Ola Davis Chatham four brothers Hassel Warren Elbert Warren Elsie Warren Dee Warren. The body will lie in state at the funeral home until time of services.

Mrs Todd Moore Die in North Hodge After Long Illness

Mrs Todd Moore 64 of North Hodge died about 6 a m today at her son Fritz Moore’s home here after a long illness. She had lived in the North Hodge community most of her life. Surviving are her husband and several children. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the North Hodge Funeral Home.

Instructor crushed to death in silage ramp accident

A 39 year old African American man, Zenon Afer, died Tuesday in Lafayette Parish when an instructor fell onto the vehicle as it climbed a silage ramp near the city. Authorities described the incident as a fatal accident on the work site.
