A small tornado damaged property near 114 Scholars Street West Monroe as reported Tuesday morning by J A Combs. The tornado struck at about 1030 am pulling a clothes line from Mrs Combs and scattering clothing with minor damage to nearby homes. Selman field logged turbulence ten miles west of Monroe around 1051 am as a cold front passed with 25 mph winds.
Communist airmen hurled 150 jets against U N warplanes in one of the Korean war’s largest air battles. The United States Fifth Air Force said 246 jets took part and at least 14 Reds were destroyed or damaged while two American B-29s were crippled.
President Truman awards Philip C. Jessup a recess appointment as U N delegate despite Senate Foreign Relations objections calling him a friend of Communist causes. Truman defended Jessup as highly qualified, noting the U N opening in Paris on November 6 while Congress is in recess. The McCarthy Stassen probe had opposed confirmation, yet Jessup denied aiding communism and defended his record.
Louisiana's supreme court will be asked to decide if a special judge and prosecutor may try five newspaper men indicted for defaming 16 officials and three gamblers. The special judge J Bernard Cocke denied motions challenging his authority and the assistant attorney general's right to prosecute.
