A representative Arcadia gathering heard Colonel Pleasant, Thames, and Smitherman advocate his local option stance and past prohibitionist record. Speakers urged voting for Pleasant, criticized state bond sales, and pledged unity among prohibitionists with Rev J T King urging voters to judge by fruits.
Col R G Pleasant Democratic gubernatorial hopeful opened his campaign in Claiborne with a packed courthouse rally. Speaker FE Thomas arrived from Arcadia and Gibsland, drawing a large reception. Meeting chair C W Seals introduced speakers after an opening address outlining key campaign points.
The attorney general and supporters filled the room with humor while criticising Mr Barret as a statewide prohibition candidate. Thomas praised Barret and urged support, ending with a glowing eulogy and hopes for Barret as the next Louisiana governor.
A large crowd heard Colonel Ruffin G. Pleasant campaign for governor in the Gibsland school auditorium marking a near record turnout. Mayor W H Lacarus introduced Sen J P Jones who presided and Pleasant spoke for about thirty minutes amid a loud ovation. Other speakers included J F Smither man of Arcadia and JL K Thomas of Shreveport. In New Orleans Howell Morgan withdrew from the state treasurer race without giving reasons, asking to reclaim his $25 deposit and promising a later announcement. Continue on Page Six.
Major General Sir Samuel Hughes announces plans to form a battalion of former United States subjects in Canada for overseas service. Since the war began, U S, French, Russian and Italian citizens have enlisted, with the first regular battalion of former United States subjects now to be recruited.
In Los Angeles on October 22 a motorcycle chase ended with two police shooting two boys in a residence district. Lehr was killed and Arthur Wanda, who claimed ownership of the machine, was fatally or seriously wounded. Police suspect the motorcycle was stolen.
The Interstate Commerce Commission ruled the proposed higher rate on domestic fertilizer and fertilizer materials from New Orleans to Louisiana points, toward the Ohio River and beyond, justified.
In San Francisco on Oct 23 the United Daughters of the Confederacy in session urged a national Jefferson Davis Highway. They envision a boulevard running through the southern states with a western terminus at San Diego.
The twentieth annual Illinois Conference on Charities and Corrections opened in Danville on October 28. A celebration of twenty years of progress in public and private charity drew many social and uplift workers from across the state as the conference runs daily through Tuesday.
Prince Leopold of Coburg, nephew of King Ferdinand of Bulgaria, was burned with acid and shot by the daughter of a Viennese police captain. She later killed herself. The prince is expected to lose both eyes.
British and American officials released an account of Edith Cavell's final interview in Brussels before her execution. The nurse spoke calmly, expressed patriotism without hatred, and asked friends to know she died for her country. A German chaplain attended and conducted the burial. contact notes discuss the fate of Cavell's body and its delivery to a nursing school.
Reports from Charleston show alienists splitting on Charlton's mental responsibility while another case, Jim Faust in West Monroe, is postponed to January 10. Berlin notes detail a ministerial mission to exhume a body once the governor general returns. Cunarders Saxonia Orduna and the Whit Star Lapland are chartered to move troops from Halifax, with 56 000 to 60 000 men expected to sail to an unspecified front.
Allied and Central reports clash over Italian front action as Vienna and Paris conflict on gains. Italians claim territory gains and Austrian positions pierced, while Vienna reports repulses with heavy losses. Other fronts show Russian advances and Turkish actions around Gallipoli as Greece and Roumania stay out of the war.
Ouachita Parish Democratic Executive Committee met at the court house and announced nominees for multiple offices. Dr. C. P. Gray was unopposed for coroner, while other races feature two to six candidates. a resolution bars voters backing the Progressive ticket from Democratic primaries. The committee set January 1, 1916 as the adjourned meeting to choose officers.
The News-Star announces M. W. Stroud as candidate for Police Juror from Ward 10 Ouachita Parish and A. Renaud seeking re election for Ward 16, Ouachita Parish in the Democratic primary.
Ward Two A J McQuiller declared nominee. Ward Five R W McClendon declared nominee. Ward Six and Ward Seven have no candidates. Ward Eight no candidate. Ward Three and Ward Ten list city judge.
The Monroe Chamber of Commerce directors held a conference with Mr. Don Farnsworth regarding rejuvenating commerce groups. They decided the needed financial aid could be found without outside help and will not contract with Farnsworth now. Farnsworth had just finished a Lake Charles campaign and was en route to Birmingham for another contract. He outlined his educational and financial plans, but the board would not consider the proposition at this time.
The federal trade commission ordered an investigation into alleged combinations of cotton buyers in North Carolina South Carolina and Georgia aimed at depressing cotton prices.
Former Kansas Governor George H Hodges visits Monroe and Ounechita parish to discuss prohibition from an economic, business view. He cites Kansas growth under prohibition, contrasts Olathe before and after, and argues the policy ruined many industries though not wheat and corn.
