The funeral for Dr D I Hirsch 59 Monroe physician will be held at his home 801 Hudson Lane Thursday at 3 p m with Rabbi F K Hirsch officiating Arrangements by Mulhearn Funeral Home He helped found public health services and a city parish free clinic before the E A Conway Memorial Hospital opened His death followed extended illness and occurred at his residence on Hudson Lane He was born in Natchez Miss and graduated Tulane in 1908.
President Taft reportedly will skip the Wisconsin presidential preference primary, shifting the GOP contest to Dewey Harford MacArthur Siassen and possibly Eisenhower. Wisconsin allows write-in votes for any candidate, raising battle for delegates as MacArthur resumes duty in Japan. MacArthur has long had Wisconsin support since 1944 when he topped the primary with 102,421 write-ins while Dewey drew 21,036.
Covington Louisiana attorney Victor E Planche 47 was fatally injured when his car collided with a truck near Magnolia Mississippi as he and two clients returned from a legal trip to Tylertown Police said the driver and a woman passenger were injured The Birmingham born Planche studied law at LSU and moved to Covington with his family at age four.
Ford truck loaded with liquor was hijacked near Houston Louisiana. Jasper V. Cox 25 Heber Oklahoma arrested in a nearby vehicle. two men fled into woods as officers fired. Driver John Baxter Muskogee Oklahoma reported robbery near Houston. Later a freighter Charles McDonnell carrying 80 passengers grounded off Philippine reefs but freed itself and remained OK.
Washington October 22 The House committee on un American activities begins the third day of hearings into communism in the motion picture industry with 79 Hollywood figures said to have engaged in subversive activities. Actress Robert Taylor is expected to testify about Song of Russia. MGM executive James McGuinness testified on script supervision and protests over Tennessee Johnson.
The citizens food committee meets to decide on calling off poultryless Thursday. Chairman Charles Luckman leads a seven member executive panel weighing a final offer from poultry and feed industries to save grain for Europe. The plan cites 16 8 million bushels saved by reducing poultry flocks and hatchings and a further 16 million by a feed conservation drive.
A Soo line passenger train and a Northern Pacific freight crashed head on near St Paul causing 22 injuries including 17 passengers and five crew. Freight engineer J A Ritchie was seriously hurt, tossed about 25 feet. Fireman George Dick was rescued from under cargo after leaping free.

George Gibson, a 79 year old Chicago paper maker, visited Calvary Episcopal Church in Conshohocken to thank the rector for a box sent 70 years ago to the nine year old son of an Episcopal clergyman in Wisconsin. The box contained a new suit with a shiny quarter and a pocket knife. He recalls his father struggling to support a wife and three children at the time.
Andrei Zhdanov told nine nations at the Poland conference that the Soviet Union could cooperate with capitalist Europe indefinitely on reciprocity and mutual obligations. He called for European unity despite systems of government and urged Communist parties to oppose United States imperialism. Zhdanov warned that failure to sustain demand abroad could spark an American economic crisis and warned against appeasement while invoking Munich era lessons.
