A former ex officio chief of the public health service and member of several wartime boards resigns from government service to return to his first loves paper work and farming. He notes ownership of farms and the News Digest paper as his main interests.
Allied dispatch notes Fifth Army in Italy achieved a transport and supply victory near Naples. Engineers, salvage crews, and workers cleared wreckage and improvised power and locomotion to move 26 ton freight trains. Amphibious ducks delivered food water gasoline and 105 mm guns to the beachhead, aiding the Naples operation.
In Los Angeles two teen girls Doris Rhodd 17 and Betty Reeves 19 fought with knives over a married man. Doris is hospitalized with deep arm wounds while Betty, who was cut on her hands, is at home. Betty said Doris had pursued the relationship and the fight followed a midnight bus encounter with friends present.
Berlin radio quoted by Reuters reports a German account alleging Marshal Badoglio and King Victor Emmanuel planned to deliver Hitler and Mussolini to the Allies. The plan supposedly involved Italy seeking terms with the enemy, but the invitation to meet was refused.
American Marauder bombers supported by Allied fighters raided the Evreux Fauville air base in France as a quick daylight follow up to German raids on western Germany. Nazi raiders struck London for the sixth night, causing casualties and damage, while RAF operations remained undisclosed.

Clarence H. Howard Jr., 44, St. Louis capitalist and director of General Steel Castings, died from a double skull fracture after a 15 foot fall while assisting a Masonic ceremony staging outside Moolah temple. He was the son of the late Clarence H. Howard Sr., a steel magnate.
Allied dispatch from Southwest Pacific reports Japanese forces in the jungle northwest of Finschhafen fighting to reach the New Guinea coast. Australians of the Ninth Division repel frontal assaults while night infiltrations by Japanese patrols make progress near the village of Katika.
In Opelousas on October 2 a election of Dr John Richardson of Alexandria as moderator of the Louisiana Presbytery was announced by Rev H N Alexander after the fall meeting at First Presbyterian church. He succeeds Dr Joel Fletcher of Lafayette. The presbytery was attended by more than twenty ministers. Rev J B McMichael of Lafayette preached before communion. Rev J M Gregory received a dismissal for a pastorate in Blacksburg Virginia. Arrangements were made to install Rev Henry W Darden as pastor of University Presbyterian church in Baton Rouge pending assembly action.
Allied reports state Fifth Army troops drive to Alife capturing the road junction town after a 10 mile push and beat back a German counter attack. Piedimonte D'Alife falls as Canaccio area repels a major assault. Montgomery's Eighth Army holds eastern sector while air combats intensify with 16 enemy planes downed.
The Gripsholm, bound for New York with about 1500 repatriates, sailed from Mormugao India to begin homeward bound service for Americans and other evacuees. Japanese Teia Maru left yesterday with Japanese nationals, as crews prepare for ongoing repatriation amid monsoon dredging in the harbor.
