A survey shows ongoing support for small businesses across the United States indicating robust confidence and continued government and community backing despite economic pressures.
Generally fair through Friday with highs in the mid 60s and Friday a touch warmer in the low 70s. Northerly winds at 5 to 10 mph today turning southerly tonight. calmer conditions expected across Union and surrounding parishes with sunrise Friday and no significant precipitation noted.
President Ford signs a new overseas voting law enabling absentee ballots for over 750,000 Americans abroad. Ouachita Parish Clerk Bill C Downey administers the local absentee effort. Navy recruit William J Harmon trained at San Diego Navy Center and is a Wossman High School alumnus from Monroe.
The government reports a four-tenths of a percent CPI rise in September led by offsetting food declines. Annual inflation about 4.9 percent with real earnings shrinking five-tenths, and wholesale prices jumping nine-tenths, signaling possible faster consumer inflation ahead.
In a simulated event the MAST air ambulance crew treated a victim from a mock semi-trailer crash at Wilson's parking lot. The overturned truck spilled radioactive material injuring about 50 people as officials monitor radiation exposure with a radiological detector. Over 40 emergency agencies participated in the fourth annual drill.
In Luling Louisiana a ferry capsized after a collision with the tanker Frosta on the Mississippi River. Up to 82 dead and as many as 60 more feared missing. 18 survivors reported. Recovery efforts used a crane on a barge as divers resumed at sunrise.
The Federal Power Commission slashed 580 million from the planned natural gas price hikes after finding consumer increases would exceed earlier estimates. The new ceiling reduces expected nationwide charges to about 1.462 billion, with residential bills rising 4 to 8 percent.
A Wilson parking lot drill involved a semi-trailer overturn shedding simulated radioactive material. About 50 shoppers were injured in the mock emergency as agencies including St. Francis and E. A. Conway Hospitals, Red Cross, and MAST air ambulance activated first aid, evacuations, and shelter operations at Lee Junior High School.
