Barge Line May Extend Service Up Mississippi Tributaries

Congressman Riley J. Wilson reports to Secretary Collins that Mississippi and Louisiana lawmakers have pressed the War Department about continuing the barge line on the Mississippi River. Officials affirm no plan to discontinue, citing satisfactory recent showing and hope for better conditions next year. Monroe Eyes River Freight Route if Rail Strike Hits

Monroe business leaders move to back a river shuttle from New Orleans to Monroe amid a nationwide railroad strike feared to disrupt freight. The Monroe Chamber of Commerce instructed S. M. Collins to pursue steamboat service with Carter Packet Co. A letter dated October 20 1921 proposes a minimum 6 12 foot river depth and mentions Lock No 3 near Riverton as controllable water depth to reach Monroe.

Barn Fire Destroys Farm Near Monroe

A large barn owned by Henry William southeast of Monroe burned early this morning. The fire damaged hay corn and other feed crops and one horse. estimated loss about 3000 with 800 insured. Weather and cause not stated.

Richland Parish to Hire Traffic Policeman

The Richland parish police jury authorizes the president to employ a traffic policeman with duties to enforce vehicle traffic ordinances on public roads. Salary set at 100 dollars a month. The state highway department takes over Girard Crews Lake road contract toward Monroe and Mashgham Rayville road. Walter Ambrose, a mail wagon driver, was fatally wounded thwarting a mail robbery in Lake Charles.

Three Fires Hit New Orleans Causing Major Loss

In New Orleans on October 21 property damage topped a quarter million dollars from three fires in separate areas. Fire crews tackled the Forschler Wagon Works Louisiana State Rice Mill and nearby docks on Montegut street, a blaze at Princess theatre on Draydes street destroyed a block, and Ward Lumber Company on Carondelet walk was leveled. All origins undetermined.
