Beverly Mass Oct 21 President Taft says high food prices are subsiding thanks to industrial prosperity and bumper crops. Secretary Wilson reports crops will cut consumer costs though farmer returns rise to 4.454 billion from 3.868 billion, with notable price drops in corn hay oats and potatoes and a record cotton crop.
Price on Oct 1 stood above last year and 2.1 cents below two years ago, signaling a potential drop in cotton goods costs. The regular Republican organization through Armand Roumain filed an injunction against the State Contest Board and the secretary of state to block placing the Progressive Party electors on the November 5 ticket. Clarence Hebert chairs the Republican state central committee with ten Republican electors from Orleans, St Martin and other parishes listed in the filing.
The filing shows the Progressive Party not legally recognized in Louisiana. Only a separate nomination for each of ten presidential electors could place a slate on the November ticket. About 1,670 signers appeared, mostly Democrats or Republicans not eligible to sign. Only ~200 valid signers remain, insufficient for any elector. Orleans Parish voters registrar may be called to verify signer affiliations. Hearing set for October 24 before Judge Brunot.
