Melvin Standifer, 19, of Rayville, died in a one vehicle crash six miles north of Crowville on La 17. State Police say he likely fell asleep at the wheel as his truck struck a tree and burst into flames, burning him beyond recognition. The Richland Tire and Service Co truck was one ton. His body was taken to Richardson Funeral Home in Winnsboro.

A crowded ferry in Luling, Louisiana, was rammed by the 22,856 ton Norwegian tanker Frosta on the Mississippi River. Eleven bodies recovered, rescue crews search for 35 cars and 75 people missing, 15 survivors taken to a local hospital. The Olla Wild aided in rescue as helicopters and small boats scoured the water.
