Baton Rouge Louisiana October 2 Bob Chinn president of LSU student body named Dorothy Pecot Franklin as homecoming queen for the LSU Tennessee football game on November 4. Walt E. Buschel 27 of Palmetto died in Baton Rouge hospital from a fractured skull after being thrown from his motorcycle at a highway overpass near Livonia. The bike skidded and overturned while avoiding a sign narrowing to one lane at the end of the overpass.
The Monroe Chamber of Commerce boards approve a larger budget beginning January 1 1940 to fund the Monroe Traffic bureau with 2000 and broaden overall chamber activities. Discussions noted reduced carbon company support and per capita contributions in Twin Cities versus peers, with plans to seek higher member dues after the new year.
In Slidell Louisiana on October 20 an engaged couple, Martha Louise Glover 21 and Albert Ray 20, were found dead in an old car two miles east of Slidell. Investigators suspect carbon monoxide poisoning from a damaged exhaust as ventilation failed. Ray worked on a Pearl River dredging project and has family in Melton Florida.

Lake Charles La October 20 Motions to quash indictments against state representatives from Calcasieu parish Robert Mutersbaugh and Dr J W Shaw for dual office holding will be argued in district court Monday. The representatives were indicted October 11 along with two police jurors Ernest J Olivier and Walter Romero.
Greenwood South Carolina report notes a 300 pound prisoner charged with forgery required a tailor due to an unusually large frame. The incident highlights humor amid a serious charge as authorities adjust to the oversized inmate.
Completion of team organization for the Twin City Community Chest campaign is announced by S. A. Moss. The drive runs from Monday through November with a goal of 29500 and a target of at least one day’s pay from every employed person in Monroe and West Monroe.

The 1929 Carnegie International awards prize money to artists from multiple nations. Alexander Brook of Brooklyn won first prize for Georgia Jungle, a drab southern scene. Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Raphael Soyer, both linked to New York, earned second honors and honorable mentions. Marc Chagall received third prize, Mariano Andreu won first honorable mention, and Soyer earned a second honorable mention for Bus Passengers.
Reports from Madrid say the 6081 ton American steamer Oakman owned by Sykes Brothers of Lake Charles La is held by British authorities at Gibraltar with a cargo of 16300 bales of cotton. The ship was bound for Barcelona and held to prevent contraband cotton from reaching Genoa for transshipment to Germany.
