Two well dressed men held up the Bank of Moreauville in Avoyelles parish at 9 a m and escaped in a coupe with 2500 dollars. The cashier was forced to surrender all money in the safe. Investigators found fingerprints at the vault as authorities chased toward Alexandria.
United States Ambassador Andrew W. Mellon voiced full support for the Hoover administration in an Oslo London speech to the English Speaking union. He defended tariff policies as not harming trade while lamenting that the American election hinges on general discontent rather than policy merits. He praised President Hoover's diligence and vision in facing the economic crisis.

The board of commissioners of the port of New Orleans announced rate cuts across wharfage and related charges. Whfage after arrival now accrues at 12 1-2 percent per hour up to seven hours, then full day rates apply, replacing prior full-day fractional charges. Cotton warehousing and storage rates and drayage and patching services also reduced. The monthly report notes a substantial rise in commodities moving over the wharves.
In Pittsburgh Roosevelt says government must balance the Treasury before bonus payments and discusses a beer tax. New York’s Smith cites Roosevelt and Garner for a Democratic victory. Farley accuses Republicans of pressuring postmasters. Mills criticizes the Democratic House record as the worst ever. Henry Ford praises Hoover as getting results and urges him to finish the job. Elihu Root warns that not reelecting Hoover would be a serious misfortune.
Mrs. Kenneth Pawley and Charles Corkran, British subjects held by Chinese bandits for weeks, were liberated and reported reaching Panshan today and Newchwang tomorrow on their way back. Duncan McIntosh escaped to warn a Japanese garrison after bandits bound the two men. Negotiations over ransom followed, with Pawley’s early message that captivity might not be so bad if she could only be released.
In Winston-Salem a Reynolds family denied that murder charges against Libby Holman Reynolds and Albert Walker were prompted by Smith Reynolds will. The will, probated in New York, largely left the fortune to his brother Richard and his sisters Mary Reynolds Babcock and Nancy Reynolds Bagley, with only minor bequests.
Governor Franklin D Roosevelt arrives in Cincinnati for a brief stay on his nationwide tour. The Democratic presidential nominee waits for a train change en route to Indianapolis as crowds gather and workers observe the stop.
About 50 attendees from several parishes gathered at Hotel Frances Cherokee Terrace for Monroe region session of Ouachita Parish Tuberculosis and Public Health Association. Speakers included Arthur J. Strawson and Mrs John M McBryde addressing Christmas Seal Sale significance and statewide movement.
In New Orleans at a southern regional Child Welfare League of America meeting, Edith Baylor of Boston called modern parents wiser and more fit to rear children. Baylor and colleague Mr Baylor cited healthier living and greater knowledge of child psychology as key advances over their grandparents.
New Orleans mayor T Semmes Walmsley said a general salary reduction in all municipal departments is planned but will not exceed 20 percent. He promised a more definite announcement by Monday after reports of the cut.
In New York on October 20 Myron C. Taylor of United States Steel met with nine leading eastern railroad executives. Talks focused on boosting rail purchases with large steel orders hoped to stimulate business though railroads cited current finances as limiting big buys. The Reconstruction Finance Corporation signaled readiness to loan for rail orders, and steel circles expect rail orders before year end to accelerate demand.
The will of the late Mrs Beulah A Forsythe widow of A A Forsythe probated in district court disperses 37520 85 of personal estate. The largest bequest is 3000 to Harvey R Clark of Schulenburg Texas. Property includes 11000 Monroe Building and Loan stock 23300 76 notes 2067 59 cash 452 50 jewelry and 500 in household goods.
The second annual fair by home demonstration clubs in this parish will be held Saturday November 5 at the Drew schoolhouse. Cooperating groups include Eureka Chapel Hill and Pleasant Hill. Rev George H Dierlan chairs the event. Last year drew a large audience and this year is expected to top 1931. Prizes cover farm exhibits canned goods pastries poultry and fancy work with judging based on best individual farm display and assorted crafts.
Two more moves by north Louisiana officers target men tied to local bank robberies this year. Albert Orgeron pleaded guilty in Caldwell parish to a May Grayson bank robbery and drew five to eight years. Ernest Gray was brought from Mobile to answer July Olla bank robbery with Ivy Morgan still at large. Yarrell Gray and Turner set for LaSalle parish trial next week. Gray faced transport with heavy guard to Jena amid coin fears.
Chief Justice Stacy said the supreme court will not certify the Lea and Davis appeals to Buncombe superior court until after next Tuesday. The delay means Lea and Davis will not be sent to prison before their lawyers file a motion for a stay of execution. The case grows from the collapse of the Central Bank and Trust company of Asheville.
Deputy Melvin Brackman and Deputy J C Crain were shot during an attempted liquor truck stop 20 miles south of Texarkana. One man was arrested, three others fled. the shooter is named by Crain as the assailant. Sheriff Turquette questions motives while liquor raids are cited as likely motive.
At the American College of Surgeons clinical congress in St. Louis doctors announced over 4,000 authenticated cancer cures by surgery radiotherapy or both, bringing total known cures in the U S and Canada to about 8,500. Keyes, Crile and Alvarez described five year cures and personal experiences with cancer treatments.
In Paterson New Jersey on October 20 Ida Horwitz laments rising taxes and contemplates building cemeteries to escape payments. The 70 year old describes dizziness and fevers from tax bills and jokes about tax relief by death and cemeteries while builders tear down her house.
