A statewide assembly in Monroe outlines a mass meeting program with simultaneous parish participation. The plan calls for all parishes to join in a coordinated event to discuss civic issues and rally community support.
A state meeting chaired by H. D. Wilson outlines a plan to organize all Louisiana parishes to reduce cotton acreage. Parish and precinct meetings will elect officials, gather pledges to lower plantings, and extend the campaign to farmers who have not signed up. The effort aims for universal participation across 52 parishes.
A Bastrop invitation to a North Louisiana Gay Decennial on Friday October 22 invites the public, notes a holiday declaration by Monroe mayor Arnold Bernstein, and highlights the Stanocola Band of Baton Rouge, a parade and speeches from national figures.
In De Ridder Louisiana Milton Brasseaux testified his confession blamed Joe Genna for planning the holdup and stabbing taxi driver J J Brevelle. Brasseaux admitted helping overpower Brevelle after the attack. Genna was convicted last week based on similar testimony and Genna’s own confession.
New Brunswick New Jersey October 20 investigators move to exhume Mrs Eleanor Mills buried here to again view the throat wound on the choir singer who was slain with Dr Edward Wheeler Hall in a double murder. Dr Otto Schultze will examine Mills remains while Hall’s body may be moved again in Brooklyn.
In New Orleans on October 20 Governor C H Simpson asked Dr V K Irion to resign as commissioner of the Department of Conservation citing a $24 500 overrun of the running appropriation July to October and warning that continued excess would force borrowing and further deficit. Irion, a confirmed official, refuses to resign and will serve until his term ends. Major Frank Payne is appointed to lead the department.
A eight man Ruston delegation led by Mayor Moore and Chamber of Commerce president Henderson travels through the eastern states for two weeks to study power service, charges, and influence of super power companies. They will visit Morristown Tennessee Muscle Shoals and Stone Mountain, with earlier probes into Arkansas Texas and South Louisiana. The group reviews Arkansas Louisiana Power and Light’s $250000 bid for the city plant and will decide on its acceptability. The eight members include O E Hodge B H Rainwater Chu Thompson Prof Frank Bogard C R Heard and H J McKnight.
Persimmon fruit trail from the home of Mrs. H. G. Hirschley led to the capture of Andrew Bemley in Canton Illinois. Bemley, 21, is accused of attacking seven women and is said to have killed Oliver Wysong. He was brought to Peoria amid fears of lynching and was captured after a chase by Canton police officer Ben Harter.
Chicago October 20. Eugene V Debs venerable socialist leader lies in a coma at a suburban sanitarium with a failing heart. Doctors warn death may come any time as myocarditis with auricular fibrillation worsens. Debs, five time Socialist presidential candidate, has endured heart illness since age 15 while continuing labor and reform efforts.
The Brendenharn Realty Co purchased the old Bloch residence on Walnut Street from Monroe Furniture and plans a brick and steel one story structure costing about 35 000 dollars. It will front 100 feet and extend 200 feet to the Illinois Central switch, with loading facilities, north of existing Biedenharn properties. Ground breaking will follow razing the Bloch residence, after which the building site will be cleared.
France skeptical over a 16-country bankers and industrialists manifesto calling for tariff barriers’ removal to revive European trade. British and German observers praise. French circles call it well meant but utopian. U S officials distance it from any tariff changes. Berlin stocks rose, while American and French leaders discuss Europe’s postwar burdens. Lucien Romier comments on equalizing debts between Europe and the United States.
Thomas C Dawkins a local insurance man and brother of Federal Judge Ben C Dawkins won the Democratic nomination for Shreveport public safety commissioner in a runoff over incumbent R L Stringfellow by 138 votes. Reuben N McKellar was renominated for streets and parks over J K McGrath by 523 votes. Nomination is effectively election.
A tropical hurricane nears Havana with an anxious wait in Miami Key West and Palm Beach. Gusts reach 80 mph in Key West and shorefront precautions include storm shutters, boarded windows, and ships seeking shelter as schools close and coast guard standby is ordered.
In Shreveport Louisiana on October 20 authorities prepared to rest after stating two remaining witnesses would not lengthy testimonies. Myrtle Nash teacher recalled for defense questioning focused on Tallulah cases and alleged incidents involving William Rundell and a ride to that home.

The Standard Oil Company of New Jersey reduced its tank wagon price of gasoline by one cent per gallon across its territory. In North and South Carolina the cut is half a cent to 19 cents, while other areas see a wholesale price of 18 cents per gallon.

An airplane at an extremely low altitude struck and killed Frank G. Browder Sr., an 84-year-old Confederate veteran, in his Montgomery area cotton field. A Black man, Clark Henry, with Browder, was severely injured, and several children from a nearby Masonic home narrowly escaped harm. The pilot and aircraft origin were not confirmed. Maxwell Field is suspected. Browder was a local cotton buyer.
A Red Cross special train is prepared to depart Miami for Key West within an hour carrying 15 nurses and 15 doctors. Reports from Key West indicate an unidentified ship sent out distress calls at noon, while Marne thon, 60 miles north, reports a 70 mile per hour wind.
A dispatch from U S Orizaba in Havana harbor said the center of a storm was over Havana at 11 20 AM with winds of 120 miles per hour. The barometer was 29 35 and the wind backed from northwest to north. No damage was noted. A Key West radiogram showed the barometer at noon 29 52 inches with NE winds about 50 mph, rising to 55 mph an hour later.
News dispatch reports restoration of communication with Havana following a period of interruption. The recovery allows resumed contact between New York and Cuban authorities as telecommunication lines are repaired and service restored to normal.
Queen Marie of Romania cancels California visits due to rail rate dispute with Southern Pacific and requests privacy. Col John Carroll cites a $1 train-rate dispute as the reason for removing San Francisco and Los Angeles from the itinerary while press access on the train is restricted.
