Fire crews contained five to six acres after a suspicious car spurred an urgent response while 40 fires flared in 17 sets earlier. W C Valentine led the state forestry fire control team as investigators remained on scene.
Washington October 17 three Atlantic and Gulf coast ship lines MENTEX Pan Atlantic and Seatrain asked the Interstate Commerce Commission for hearings on rail water freight rate relationships. They note wartime disruptions and urge evidence be heard to maintain established se and rail water service relationships east of the Rocky Mountains.

President Truman arrived at Andrews air field at 10:04 a.m. today, ending a weeklong Pacific trip. His Independence aircraft was diverted from National airport to the nearby Maryland base due to heavy fog.
President Truman, defending democracy, warned Russia against imperialism in a major foreign policy speech at the War Memorial Opera House. Backed by U S military power, he told audiences via Voice of America that the United States would not hesitate to go to war to preserve the free way of life. He departed San Francisco headed to Washington after a 14,000 mile, eight hour leg of his round trip.
David Greenglass, 28, a former army sergeant who worked on the atom bomb project at Los Alamos, pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to convey secret defense information to Russia. Judge William Bondy presided. Greenglass was connected to a superseding indictment with Anatoli Yakovlev.
New Iberia Louisiana October 18 Sen Russell Long predicts that Congress will pass a universal military training law when it reconvenes in January. He spoke at an open forum sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce as part of democracy versus communism and socialism week. Other speakers were Reps Otto Passman F Edward Hebert T Hale Boggs Henry D Larende Jr Edwin E Willis and Sen Allen J Ellender all Democrats of Louisiana. Passman called President Truman's trip to see General MacArthur 100 percent political. Ellender cited reasons for continuing the government farm subsidy program. He said it supported a sound farm economy. Long was asked why other nations did not contribute more troops to the Korean conflict. He said the U S is the only power able to do so and that the State Department had not pressed others sufficiently. Hebert, on the House Armed Services Committee, said rearmament would continue regardless of Korean War outcome. He added full scale war is not inevitable but peace will not be attained in this generation. Willis predicted Congress would pass the tidelands bill after January and expected a presidential veto and override. Passman said he would not vote
Saigon October 18 France announced abandonment of the Dong Dang frontier post in Indo China relinquishing control of the main invasion route from China. The garrison reportedly withdrew to Langson as a broader French retreat along the frontier accelerates amid Viet Minh pressure.
Taft says a Labor-Socialist government backed by the CIO is targeted in Washington. He accuses the Democratic party of inaction in Ohio and says campaign material aims to replace long-serving lawmakers with pro-union puppets. Hanley, NY Lt. Gov., says he was offered money to drop out of the GOP Senate race and Dewey denies involvement.

He attacks socialism and calls for a strong internal and foreign front against communism, linking statism to loss of liberty. Baton Rouge La Oct 18 forests raged through South Louisiana with more than 500 fires this month. Rainfall today could aid crews after an overall drop from 88 fires in 15 parishes on Monday to 25 in eight parishes by last night. Seventeen blazes burned in Beauregard parish with remaining fires in Natchitoches La Salle Rapides Evangeline Allen Vernon and Livingston parishes.
In Baton Rouge on October 17, Alvin W. Hall about 35 fatally shot his estranged wife, 30, as she washed clothes at her mother's yard. Mrs. Hall died later. Hall then shot himself and died. The couple had been living apart and she had filed for legal separation.
Jerusalem reports that the Knesset voted to dissolve and call fresh elections. Ben-Gurion failed to form a new cabinet as eight ministers were not accepted for a caretaker group. The parliament set two weeks for a bill to formalize dissolution and election dates.
