Monroe pioneer J B Filhiol Sr dies at hometown
J B Filhiol Sr a Monroe civic figure and descendant of Don Juan Filhiol died in a local hospital. He helped lay out Monroe and donated the courthouse site in 1811 later guiding the town’s early governance. Survived by wife Florence Miller, son J B Filhiol Jr, two daughters and a sister. Brother Joseph died last month. He served 24 years on the Ouachita parish school board and was recently elected its president.

First Assistant Attorney General W C Perrault says Claiborne parish cannot legally purchase land to donate to Louisiana State University for an agricultural experiment station. He instructed District Attorney Fred L Jackson that LSU must use its own 100000 dollar appropriation for a Red River Valley station and the parish police jury may not buy a site within the parish.

Bodies of 13 aboard plane crash buried in Wyoming
From Laramie Wyoming mortuaries the bodies of 13 victims of yesterday's chartered plane disaster were shipped home for burial. Passengers and crew from Canada and seven states were aboard the twin engined craft which plunged into a snow covered prairie near Laramie shortly after midnight, breaking into many pieces. Investigators found no clue to the cause amid the wreckage scattered through deep snow. The National Air Transport Service flight from Oakland California to Newark New Jersey was to refuel in Cheyenne Wyoming when zero visibility and a snowstorm doomed the trip. Local resident Paul Fletcher heard the aircraft circling before the crash near the city airport. Continued on Sixth Page.

Lonnie Howard Peevy Sr., 65, longtime Monroe resident and farm executive who ran Hardtimes plantation as manager and overseer, died late Thursday. He served as game warden and leaves wife Johnnie Peevy, son L H Peevy Jr, daughters Loren Snyder and John R Goodlett, sisters Mrs Porter Burgess and Mrs Claude Roberts, and two grandchildren.
