President Carter urged rapid Senate approval of the Panama Canal treaty before a blue ribbon committee of business labor and military leaders. Averill Harriman led the panel which claims broad backing and growth as White House aides note unofficial backing. The panel formed from a White House opinion leaders breakfast and a task force led by Hamilton Jordan but operates without official White House involvement.
The stegosaurus, a prehistoric 80,000 pound giant, is said to have a tiny 3 ounce brain in its head. A supposed second brain in the tail allegedly guided its powerful hind legs.
West German pilot Capt. Juergen Schumann was killed when hijackers aboard a Lufthansa jet seized to Somalia. The plane holds 86 hostages including an American woman and 11 beauty queens as Bonn negotiates with Somali leader Siad Barre and Wischnewski over ransom and prisoner releases.
Longshoremen who limited their strike to containerships face a three week backlog after a 16 day walkout. ILA ordered a return to work as pressure from farmers and grain officials and looming federal action pushed the port toward normal operation. Backlog of grain barges and ships awaiting loading means further cargo delays.
In Twin Cities, a Friday flock of geese over Monroe and West Monroe signals approaching winter. The sight reminds waterfowlers they soon can return to blinds in Louisiana marshes, as the Chit Chat column notes.
Mayor W L Jack Howard said it is very doubtful the City of Monroe will sponsor the Ark La Miss Agricultural and Industrial Fair next year. He blamed district attorney actions and said city officials were uninvolved in West Ouachita disruption. final decision depends on public and business leader input.
Monroe area climatologist Dell Griffin Jr. reports a 50 50 chance of a winter as harsh or harsher than last year, while the National Weather Service sticks to a 1 in 30 chance of a severe winter. Helfert cites a blocking ridge off California and warmer Pacific waters as factors, with NWS hedging on long term outlooks.
