A youth attempted to seize a purse from a woman identified as Patrolman Bruce Brown, a judo expert. The suspect was quickly captured by officers, with Patrolmen James Hoskins and John Tinker assisting.

Memorial services by Chief Tusquahoma Chapter DAR for Miss Katherine Averett, charter member and former West Monroe Junior High teacher, set for 2 p.m. Saturday October 21 at Hasley Cemetery with a DAR grave marker and tribute by Mrs. F J Ortis. Miss Averett, native of West Monroe, taught in Ouachita Parish for 41 years.
Vice Admiral Semmes announced the 22nd Annual National Competitive Examination for the Regular Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps will be held on December 9. NROTC funds tuition uniforms books, and a $50 monthly subsistence for up to four years while students attend 52 civilian colleges and train as midshipmen in summers. Eligible seniors should apply by November 17 using forms from counselors or the Navy Recruiting Office in the post office building.

Two Concordia Parish women were hospitalized after a southbound five car collision one mile north of Vidalia on U S 65 84. Ruby Miles 32 of Ridgecrest in critical condition Linda Corley 17 of Vidalia in satisfactory condition under observation.

Ovesta Fields of 309 N 25th Monroe received a 300 fine and a two month jail term on each of two aggravated battery counts and a 300 fine and a two month jail term for discharging firearms within the city. The terms do not run concurrently. Judge William L Crowe presided in Monroe City Court. Andrew Flemming of 813 Bethume Monroe was also fined in the session.
Ira Lewis of 709 Mays Ruston forfeited a $425 cash bond for DWI and a $30 bond for negligent driving. Nathan Dawson of Mangham was fined $425 for DWI. George Queen of Monroe was fined $100 for no driver license. Berda Mae Hudson of Oak Grove seized a $100 cash bond on theft. Miles C Hildebrand of Shreveport fined $75 for soliciting door to door magazine sales. Cassie L McGinnis of Monroe fined $30 for negligent driving. Michael McCain of Lafayette forfeited $30 cash bond for negligent driving. Receiving $10 fines were Ronald Caples of Monroe and several others for negligent driving.
Two West Monroe residents remain hospitalized after a two car wreck on Wallace Dean Road near 6 a m Sunday. Harold R Sanders 20 in serious condition and Thomas L Avant 21 listed as satisfactory. State police say Sanders car stalled with lights off on the road edge when Avant's car struck its left rear and overturned the Sanders vehicle.
In Tokyo a leftist student group Zengakuren sparked riots injuring 70 people including 600 policemen and killing one student. The unrest disrupted political proceedings as James Hagerty was escorted to safety. Eisenhower cancelled a Tokyo visit and Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi resigned amid the turmoil.
In Tokyo protests near the airport, peaceniks using clubs toppled armored cars and clashed with 2,500 police who fired tear gas for four hours. A student died after being run over by a seized police vehicle. The incident fuels tensions over Sato's government and a looming U.S. Japan defense treaty renewal in 1970.
