FBI agent W A Murphy said the half million shortage exposing River Oaks State Bank could not exist without someone in the bank knowing. Dallas agents expect weeks to trace the kited check scheme as bank examiners estimate losses up to 750000 after the closure Monday.
Secretary of State Dulles announced the United States would aid any victim of aggression in the Middle East within constitutional limits. The issue arose amid Iraqi troop movements toward Jordan and Israeli fears of renewed fighting. Israel warned Iraq entry would breach the 1949 Palestine armistice and may trigger war. Dulles also reported progress at the UN on the Suez crisis and defended his right to edit conference transcripts to protect U.S. foreign relations.
A Pan American Airways stratoclipper ditched 1,045 miles southwest of here at 10 16 a m CST. All 31 aboard were rescued in good condition by the Coast Guard cutter Pontchartrain after the plane broke in half. The crew of 135 launched boats and liferafts, transferring four passengers from the first class tourist flight as a Transocean plane reported the forward section sinking five minutes later. The Pontchartrain circled the scene for hours awaiting better ditching conditions before the rescue was completed.
A Mississippi farmer watched a Navy training plane wag its wings before crashing in his Perry County field. The pilot, George Everett Cochran, 22, was killed, and the farmer and his wife carried him from the wreckage as airmen recovered the body.
A 29 year old Dayton Ohio man Harry Rouzer Jr who posed as a Navy lieutenant bragged to police he roamed in 18 or 20 states passing 20000 to 25000 in bad checks and was sought by the FBI for car theft across state lines He admitted wearing the uniform to make check crashes easier and claimed a stolen car could not be found in New Orleans before he drove to Shreveport
Wayne Huckaby, Monroe commissioner of streets and parks, announced his resignation effective ASAP citing general conditions and personal reasons. In a brief letter to Governor Earl K. Long, he said he wished to vacate the office soon after serving nearly three months of a renewed term.
A trial examiner for the NLRB dismissed two year unfair labor practice charges filed by the United Auto Workers against Kohler Co of Sheboygan Wisconsin. The ruling cites that UAW international trustees are constitutional officers who failed to sign non Communist affidavits. The decision is subject to appeal to the full board and weakens UAW hopes in its extended strike.
Rep Walter A Chachere of Franklin Parish Louisiana was booked on a negligent injury charge after a Sunday traffic accident that injured six people including himself. He allegedly tried to left turn into a car driven by Fuller Scott. Scott and several others were hospitalized with concussion and possible back fracture.
Jackson Mississippi reports saturations enforcement expanding to Tunica Harrison and Lowndes counties with 21 extra units. In Hinds County 446 tickets issued with 364 for speeding and no accidents reported, while Lauderdale County earlier yielded 656 tickets in two days, two thirds for speeding.
Chicago Democrats say President Eisenhower ignores a chance to end the hydrogen bomb deadlock with Russia in a national campaign speech Stevenson, the Democratic nominee, urges the United States to lead efforts to end H-bomb tests he warns may cause unmeasured damage to humanity and disputes the president on key points.
President Eisenhower launched a five day West coast swing by air with eight speeches planned. He departed quietly aboard Columbia III with Mrs Eisenhower and aides, pausing to wave. The tour began in Minnesota with midday talks in St Paul and Minneapolis before moving through Washington Oregon and California, ending on the return trip via Colorado.
Five of six bellwether counties show Eisenhower likely re election victory with Albany Laramie Coos and Vanderburgh among those still aligned. Editors note weaker margin in Wyoming and New Hampshire counties while Indiana and Oregon counties tilt toward Eisenhower. one Missouri county not sampled.

Ouachita parish clerk of court R Dean Farr announces a school of instruction for all commissioners serving in the November 6 general election. Sessions will be held at Neville High School Wednesday at 2 and 7 p.m. Attendance is urged as withdrawals from the commissioners list are possible for nonattendance. Machines will be sealed Thursday November 1 at the Selman Field voting machine warehouse.
The weather bureau predicts rain for Northeast Louisiana and the state on Wednesday with little impact on temperatures. Today’s high reached 79 at noon and a low of 54. Tonight’s low about 56, rising to 86 on Wednesday. Pollen count at noon was 102. Monday’s high temperature and the minimum of 34 are noted.
LSU announced a plan to issue “good character certificates” for second semester enrollment. The certificates, demanded by a 1956 anti integration law, will verify students’ moral character for those enrolled from Louisiana high schools. out of state students handle their own certificates.
The Ouachita parish grand jury released names of ten residents indicted for illegal registration or voting. A total of 73 true bills and eight no true bills were reported. Indicted individuals include Percy J. Wallace Bertha Wallace Cracy Eppinette Leon Eppinette Edna Green Joe W. Swift Mildred Swift Robin Green Wilma S. Sholars and E C Sholars with counts ranging from one to two. The panel pre termitted nine gambling cases, noting state gambling statutes too restricted for true bills but keeping those cases open for more evidence. It urged city officers to curb card games and dice.
