In Macon Georgia on October 18 Judge Malcolm D Jones dropped murder charges against Mrs Odessa Reynolds and her teenage son Arthur Price Bell connected to Ronald S Reynolds death in Augusta Georgia The Fort Worth woman claiming to be Reynolds widow led investigators The coroner's jury had said death was by some form of poisoning but the solicitor general could not prove the case and charges were withdrawn.

Vichy France October 16 reports Marshal Petain ordered a speedy public trial for five leaders of defeat including former premiers Blum and Daladier and former generalissimo Gamelin. Indefinite internment for three others held responsible awaits Riom trial. Daladier Blum and Gamelin to be kept at Fort De Portalet near Pau.

John Henry Lewis of Tensas parish, a Black man, was found guilty and given two years in a federal penitentiary for three counts of false claims on a selective service questionnaire. U S District Attorney Malcolm Lafargue called it the stiffest sentence yet in the western district of Louisiana and pledged a crackdown on future draft violations. Lewis admitted guilt in federal court before Judge Ben C Dawkins after a Wednesday grand jury returned twenty one true bills.
