Monroe voters will decide November 27 on a one cent city sales tax expanding over five years from January 1 1957 to December 31 1961. The tax applies to items under state tax and on services, with revenue earmarked for parks recreation streets and fire and police services. Polls open from 6. Continues on second page.
A freak late season storm battered central Florida with gale winds and heavy seas. In a separate incident Henry Variety, 14, of Winter Park drowned after high winds swept two men from a boat on Lake Poinsett. The 67-foot shrimp boat Ike was found safe 30 miles off Fort Myers, with two aboard unharmed. Forecaster Paul Moore noted the storm resembled a nor easter and winds peaked near 70 mph at the Keys. The system moved north toward Daytona Beach as power lines trees and plates glass were toppled along the coast.
Chicago police said a 15 year old Black youth, Kelly Bennett, admitted fatally stabbing Mildred Hayes during a purse snatching after she resisted and screamed. Another 15 year old, Herbert W Leake, was named as an accessory in the theft from the deceased woman.
AP reports rising strain on the Israel Jordan frontier. Israel withdraws ambassadors from four capitals while Jordan holds military talks with Iraq. Rumors say Iraq plans about 3000 troops to reinforce Jordan as King Hussein meets Abdul Ilah. US and Britain reportedly approve.
West Babylon New York police plan to count hundreds of crumpled bills and tarnished coins found scattered through the ramshackle Long Island house of a retired cab driver and his recluse sister after two men posing as delivery men robbed John Van Huda age 58 of about twelve thousand dollars. The nine room house contained money littered among old newspapers rags boxes and bottles with rats nibbled on some bills. Initial estimates suggested up to fifty thousand dollars may have been taken. Babylon police chief Percy K Hempstead led the inquiry.
Cooler nights and warm days persist in north Louisiana with clear to partly cloudy skies. Selman Field reports a low of 54 and a noon high of 81, with tonight's forecast in the mid 50s and Tuesday's highs between 83 and 87 as pollen counts register at 4.
A Royal Air Force spokesman said a British ship recovered wheels and undercarriage parts from the missing U S Military Air Transport plane, with 59 servicemen aboard, about 250 miles southwest of Land’s End. A U S Air Force spokesman could not yet confirm the wreckage origin. The debris was taken aboard the British tanker Navicella as a high speed launch headed to the site. The search for survivors will continue indefinitely.
Adlai E Stevenson pushes Nixon higher on his target list as the 1956 campaign moves into its final three weeks. A top strategist says public sentiment against Nixon makes him a prime issue. Stevenson plans a Chicago radio television address at 9 30 p m EST on halting H bomb tests and will ring a doorbell during a Libertyville visit to dramatize small contribution drives.
Lake Providence Louisiana Oct 15 Special three railroad workers were seriously injured when rocks placed on a Missouri Pacific track derailed a gasoline powered motor car five miles northwest of Lake Providence at about 7 36 am The injured were Johnny Young who suffered a skull fracture Dan Bell with a fractured leg and Frank Nervis who had extensive lacerations and severed tendons in both hands The crew of five was from Millikin the foreman C Profit white narrowly escaped injury and the three Negro men were pinned beneath the derailed car transferred from the scene to a Vicksburg hospital by Dr Don Davis
United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold plans a new bid to reconcile Britain France and Egypt in the Suez dispute after Security Council endorsement of six settlement principles and a Soviet veto on international canal operation. Talks with Hammarskjold were pursued in private with Dulles and Lloyd also weighing SCUA options amid tension over tolls and Egypt cooperation.
After more than a week of investigations the Ouachita parish grand jury was to present its report in Fourth District court this afternoon. The panel, in session since Monday, planned to examine over 40 cases and inspect parish and state buildings including the parish courthouse Louisiana Training Institute and Charity Hospital. Utah Governor J Bracken Lee, defeated in the intra party bid for a third term, announces he will run as an independent. He remains on the ballot thanks to Citizens for Lee while George D Clyde leads the Republican ticket and L C Romney leads the Democrats. Lee accuses Sen Arthur V Watkins of fraud and party splitting, pledging to expose his manipulations in the campaign. Watkins offers no comment. Clyde says he runs for himself, not a group.
A seven member Louisiana legislative panel says any evidence of improper rebates by the Employment Security Division will be turned over to federal or state grand juries. They review records back to 1950 to determine overpayments to firms and workers. One firm allegedly received 300000 in rebates.
Mrs. Earl Coats, 48, longtime department manager in a downtown De Siard street store, died in a local hospital after a heart attack two weeks earlier. Funeral set for Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Mulhearn Funeral Chapel with Rev. W. D. Milton officiating. Survived by husband Joe N. Coats Sr., son A. M. Coats Jr., daughters Mrs. Clyde Allbritton Jr. and Mrs. Fred Billhorn Jr., and parents Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Gamble. Pallbearers listed. she was an active member of West Monroe First Methodist Church.
In Pittsburgh Kennedy fumbled a nonpartisan Knights of Columbus dinner, misplacing his suitcase and tuxedo at the airport. A K of C official called him Senator Wagner of New York and Mayor Lawrence misnamed him John Fitzgerald Kennedy, prompting loud laughter from the crowd.
Oklahoma City AP Former Yankee pitcher Allie Reynolds says he has no political ambitions and has not decided on a gubernatorial bid for 1958. Reynolds, hospitalized for a back injury from a bus crash two years ago, noted he has not been in the state long enough to pursue politics.
The Louisiana Public Service Commission will hold two day hearings starting at 9 30 a m Tuesday focusing on telephone services and transportation. Commissioner John L McKeithen will conduct hearings including a citation against Southern Belt Telephone Co to justify adding services in Fort Necessity Liddieville Jiggers Swampers Crowville and surrounding rural areas. Also on docket are LaSalle Telephone Co increase in rates for Jena Olla Tullos Urania Wisner and nearby areas in LaSalle Franklin and Catahoula parishes and a Missouri Pacific Railroad Co hearing on discontinuing agency stations at Mangham and Spencer. A Southern Bell case on extending service to St Best community in Jackson Parish and 32 total hearings are listed, many for licenses or permits for transportation.
