A Whippet coupe owned by F. Strauss of 1909 Jackson Street was taken from 229 Walnut Street sometime between 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 a.m. Sunday, police were informed yesterday.
William Bailey, a Black man, is jailed on larceny charges after allegedly stealing a car from the Osterland estate on Harrison Street. Osterland fired at Bailey as he fled, injuring him in the shoulder. Bailey was treated at St. Francis sanitarium before being moved to parish jail.
The Standard Pipe Line company of Louisiana lost its appeal in the supreme court over taxes imposed by the Index-Sulphur drainage district of Arkansas. The court ruled there was no federal question and noted the company did not contest the original assessment for general taxes. Justices said failure to pursue earlier appeals deprived it of the right to challenge the assessment.
James Turner, a Black man, pled guilty to breaking and entering in daylight and received an 18 month term in the state penitentiary. He admitted stealing an overcoat, wrist watch, scarf, and shoes from several locations, with pawns traced to Monroe under aliases James Moody and Matthew Staten.
C. M. Kennedy, a young pipeline employee, was jailed for 600 days and fined $250 by Judge Percy Sandel after being found with a bottle of whisky at the carnival grounds. If the fine isn’t paid, four additional months in jail are required. Kennedy was arrested Saturday night by the sheriff's department on suspicion of attempting to sell liquor.
In a deposition at the Indiana state prison Stephen son accuses Hiram W. Evans imperial wizard of the Ku Klux Klan of orchestrating the 1923 murder of Capt. W. S. Coburn in Atlanta. He says Evans urged Coburn be removed and that Fox carried out the shooting.
