Mrs. Alice Evans Gladden 83 mother of Mrs. W L Ethridge Sr died at 816 St John Street at 11 p.m. Thursday. Funeral Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ernest Duncan Holloway officiating. Interment Riverview Burial Park. She was a Homer Louisiana native born September 28 1867 and resident of Monroe for 57 years. She is survived by her daughter and eight grandchildren.
President Truman arrived at Hickam Field at 7 56 a m aboard the Independence en route to a history making one day conference with General MacArthur. The Pacific visit follows a flight from Fairfield-Suisun Air Force Base in California.
Tokyo reports 37 warships and allied air forces striking Red Korean supply lines from Soviet Siberia along the northeast coast. South Korean infantry from ROKI pressed a three pronged attack northward from captured Wonsan, aiming for further gains.
Washington October 13 government officials moved to draft clarifying rules under the new anti subversives law to determine who may enter the United States. The issue includes whether Germans who joined Nazi youth or labor fronts are barred and which immigrants may be detained at Ellis Island.
Lake Success Oct 13 Soviet Foreign Minister Vishinsky vowed to press Russia's objections as the United States and allies seek to extend the UN secretary general's term beyond February. The Soviets vetoed Lie's re election in the Security Council and hinted at further detailed objections in the General Assembly while names such as Ramaswami Mudaliar and Gunnar Myrdal were mentioned as possible successors.
White House officials disclose President Truman will confer with General Douglas MacArthur at a point west of Hawaii tomorrow. Officials await the arrival of Mr. Truman’s plane at Hickam Field. He will fly out tonight shortly before midnight and return after the talks.
On Oct 13 in Lake Success United States and allies rallied behind Trygve Lie to secure a second five year term as United Nations secretary general. Soviet veto blocked re election, council president Warren R. Austin said he supported Lie, praising his gifts and courage despite disagreements. Lie appeared pleased after a tense session.
Albert Barclay, 29, accused of using a pistol to obtain a $500 loan from Compton National Bank, was jailed in Los Angeles after being ordered held for federal grand jury on bank robbery. FBI said his claim of needing funds to avert an underworld death threat was false.
French forces abandoned Thatkhe amid a widening retreat along the Indo China frontier. The move marks a third major outpost lost in a month, leaving about 300 miles exposed to Vietminh forces led by Ho Chi Minh. Warnings grew of growing French losses as Dongkhe and Caobang had fallen earlier.
Arizona Governor Dan E. Garvey said he received a $200,000 bribe offer to appoint a gambling czar if an initiative to legalize gambling passed in the November election. He described the offer as coming through a friend and said he could not identify the bribeor. The plan would allow a governor to appoint a superintendent to license gambling establishments statewide.
Tulsa realtor and executive vice president of the National Institute of Real Estate Brokers, Bob Collins, urged delegates at the Louisiana Real Estate Association meeting to oppose government price controls. He warned of harm seen in England and France and stressed better advertising and credit screening. The event features R E F Jackson and Jack Bates, with a planned river boat trip.
Senator Elmer Thomas of Oklahoma said he would not campaign for the Democratic slate in his state though he will vote for it on election day. He criticized the party platform for omitting hydroelectric power, flood control and irrigation, and farmer parity, saying supporting the ticket would require him to contradict his own positions. He added he cannot endorse a platform he believes is wrong.
Long Beach, Oct 13 An inquest is set today into the death of 10 year old Catherine Frances Erickson. Music teacher Violet Johns Berling 26 is held on murder suspicion. Autopsy says strangulation from food chunks. Frances died en route to hospital after alleged restraint.
Tokyo October 13. The first group of 32 liberated U S prisoners to be returned home from Korea left Haneda air base today. Their journey began September 28 at Namwon near Chinju, where they were liberated by the U S 25th Infantry Division. The flight will land at Fairfield Suisun air base California. Included are Cpl Jim A Weaver of Matiston Mississippi and Pfc Lionel J Guitreau of Gonzales Louisiana.
Twenty five officers of the second battalion of the 4022nd infantry training regiment were activated for active duty Friday and assigned to depart soon. The list includes Lt. Col. Odell E. Deville Mangham La Major Eric R. Waller 2607 Kinmore Capt. Edward F. Glusman 102 McGuire Capt. James W. Moore 803 Km street and many others across Louisiana with addresses in Ruston Monroe Winnsboro and Columba among others.
Mrs. John D. Ewing 47 wife of Shreveport Times editor and KWKH owner died in Gulfport Miss from cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Osbornes Chapel Shreveport with Rev Frank Walters. Interment Forest Park Cemetery. Survived by husband two children Helen Clay and John D. Ewing Jr.
Washington October 13 Hous ing Expediter Tighe E Woods said only 184 of 3 000 eligible communities have taken action to retain federal rent control after December 31. Action required is a council resolution or a popular referendum to maintain control until June 30. If no action is taken, decontrol will be automatic January 1.
Tokyo October 13 Brig. Gen. Bryan L Milburn approved life sentences for two American soldiers convicted of raping a 10 year old Japanese girl. Cpl. Roy J Stewart 29 Grand Rapids Michigan and Cpl Jesse J Edwards 23 Kosciusko Mississippi were named. Sentences subject to review by the judge advocate general's office.
Rep. John E. Rankin of Mississippi said he will seek impeachment charges against Agriculture Secretary Brannan if the cotton export limit is not lifted. He called the order an outrage and urged Brannan to resign. The Agriculture Department announced exports to March 31 would be limited to two million bales.
Selective Service Director Hershey proposes drafting 18-year-olds to boost armed forces, arguing 10 million youths in that group would be a rich manpower source. He spoke to the American Veterans Committee noting current rules bar induction until 19 and urging congressional action. He warned veterans would be wholly exempted if 18-year-olds could be drafted, amid existing deferments for WW II veterans and long-serving ex-soldiers.
