In fog bound Lackawanna line near New Milford Pennsylvania a Buffalo to New York passenger train crashed into a slowly moving freight. The engineer and fireman aboard the freight pusher died and three other railroad workers were injured. Passengers were unharmed. Officials blame the dense fog and a failed signal protection.

At the West Virginia state penitentiary in Moundsville on October 13 one inmate, Earl Blankenship of Fairmount, was killed and his partner, Harry McCracken, wounded after guards thwarted the escape plot. McCracken escaped into a cell house and was shot in the shoulder when he resisted.

Items include his large library, copyrights of his books such as The Story of France Napoleon Life and Times of Thomas Jefferson and Life and Times of Andrew Jackson. The estate also includes Rickory Hill, the Watson home place and 193 acres of land.

The coast guard Seneca seized a 964 ton oil burner offshore with 32 crew and 43 000 cases of liquor. The ship Sagatind had sailed from Antwerp a month earlier bound for St Pierre.
