Romanian units man eastern bank positions along the Sez river preparing an assault toward areas south to the Panelion. German reports say limited activity along the southern front with attacks repulsed near the Pripet.

The United States Chamber of Commerce proposed a federal retail sales tax as an alternative to the administration plan. Ellsworth C. The body of Aviation Cadet David Doughty 24 son of Mrs Blanche F Doughty of Monroe will arrive by Missouri Pacific train Tuesday night. A full military funeral will be held at First Baptist Church Monroe Wednesday. Survived by his mother his wife Mrs Mary Evelyn Rayes Doughty formerly of Baton Rouge and a brother Findley Dough ty midshipman at Annapolis the brother is expected to attend the funeral.
In Plaquemines Parish near Pointe-a-la-Hache a state guard raided Frank Giardano home, nephew of District Attorney Leender Pere, seeking weapons. About 25 guardsmen crossed the river amid a ferry disruption linked to a prior incident. Perez in New Orleans denied ordering the ferry stoppage and said traffic falls under federal jurisdiction. The guard remained to back Walter J. Blaize as sheriff, after removing Dr. Ben R Slater, amid ongoing parish power struggle.
London reports Portugal has allowed Allied use of Azores ports and airfields to bolster anti submarine operations. Churchill says Portugal will remain neutral and that all British forces will be withdrawn after hostilities end. Roosevelt was kept informed as negotiations proceed. the Azores lie 1 000 miles west of Lisbon with nine islands including Faial.
Senator Hill of Alabama predicted swift passage of a bill authorizing 300000000 in federal grants to public schools. Support came from Chairman George of Georgia and Senator Nye of North Dakota. The measure would not allow federal supervision of state school administration or curriculum.
Senator Ellender of Louisiana urged an immediate inquiry into more than 13.7 billion dollars in lend lease expenditures after citing a Stettinius letter. He pressed for oil tin iron ore and rubber concessions from Allies and bases in return for aid, as revealed in a Public telegram message.
Rear Admiral Husband E. Kimmel, tied to Pearl Harbor, denies drafting or sending a letter to Secretary Knox requesting an immediate court martial. He says he welcomes a court martial but notes wartime duties prevent such action now. Navy reports no letter has been received.
