Monroe’s James Harris, quarterback of the Los Angeles Rams, threw for 436 yards against Miami last week. The Rams aim to protect him tonight against the San Francisco 49ers in a high profile matchup.

Gov. Edwin Edwards said he has no immediate plans to raise state taxes to fund mass transit aid and teacher pay raises. He will meet with legislators but does not expect a new special session or overtures to improve relations with the House. Edwards defended past cuts and urged economizing, while noting the need for funds to support his $140 million program and a one cent sales tax proposal. He also commented on the New Orleans transit crisis, Carter, and Ford, saying he may accompany Carter if he visits Louisiana but isn’t sure he will campaign.
City officials dispute a reported meeting behind council chambers involving Commissioner Harper and charter members Parker and Kirkham. City employee Jesse Smith confirms a meeting occurred and volunteers for a lie detector test, while Mayor Howard pushes for unity and cautions against reviving old disputes. A layer of smoke over Monroe and West Monroe resulted from burning timber east of the Twin Cities. Ouachita Parish Fire Department reported many calls about the smoke which stayed near the ground due to a temperature inversion. The timber burn occurred near the Russell Sage Wildlife Management area.
Paul Tibbets, pilot of the Enola Gay mission, flew a B29 over Harlingen during Airshow 76 to raise funds for the Confederate Air Force. About 40,000 attendees paid up to 5 dollars each to witness a simulated A bomb drop and ground detonations, with veteran aviators and restored World War II aircraft on display.
