The weatherman forecasts highs around 88 to 92 degrees today and Friday with a 70 to 73 degree low tonight. The mercury reached 91 in Monroe on Wednesday and 93 at Columbia and Winnsboro, bringing dry conditions that spur a return to intense cotton harvesting across most sections.

Pope John XXIII opened the second Vatican ecumenical council in St. Peter's Basilica appealing for Christian unity. He urged unity in prayer, esteem, and mutual respect, noting progress but saying full unity in truth remains to be achieved. The historic council begins with 2,500 delegates. the next session is planned for Saturday.
