British troops and police fought rioters in Kowloon for a second straight day using riot guns bayonets and tear gas. Chinese casualties were reported, with at least eight dead as order struggled to be restored on the mainland.
Communist and Nationalist clashes in Hong Kong escalated into open warfare. Reports say more than 100 people killed as violence rocked the British Crown colony.
A severe outbreak in Kowloon, part of the British crown colony, targeted foreigners and leftists, with loot and arson spreading across police stations. Hundreds injured including a Swiss couple. a taxi driver died. Acting Gov E B David imposed a curfew for Kowloon from 7 30 p m to 10 a m. Hong Kong island, housing a million residents, remained calm. Spotter planes and troops fought rioters as US navy ships Calvert Quapaw and Gardiner s Bay adjusted their operations.
Dr. E. J. Young announced retirement as head of E. A. Conway Charity Hospital, effective November 1, with prior plans for October 15. He cited age and length of state service as reasons and said he has no immediate plans.
The state tax and bond board authorized an election on a one cent sales tax. Mayor W L Howard said a special city council session at 10 a m Friday will set the date, with a likely election in late November.

President Eisenhower rejected Adlai Stevenson’s call to halt H-bomb testing and end the draft. He said his administration has done everything possible to control the H-bomb and use atomic power peacefully while prioritizing management of internal affairs in the campaign.
Louisiana State University Angus and Hereford cattle captured the most adult division championship awards at the Ouachita Valley Fair in West Monroe. Judging finished Wednesday afternoon as the fair runs Monday through Saturday. LSU's "Proud Prince 38th of LSU" won the champion Angus bull, and "LSU Beau Heir the 8th" led Hereford bulls with "T. R. Miss Husker the 6th" and "Dot Repeater LSU the 9th" as champion female and reserve female respectively. Inglewood Plantation of Alexandria exhibited the reserve Angus champion bull.
Senate Election subcommittee may resume public hearings before the November 6 election to compile a composite picture of campaign financing. Gore said hearings could occur in Monroe and other sites, but no action was taken on restoring voting rights amid reports of thousands of African Americans removed from Louisiana rolls.
A U S military C118 Liftmaster vanished over the eastern Atlantic with 59 aboard from an England base. A large search was launched. the aircraft carried 2 Air Force officers 48 enlisted men and a Navy crew of 3 officers 6 enlisted. It departed near London for Lajes Air Force Base in the Azores and was last heard from near Land’s End.
The Crossett Arkansas dam for a 125000 impounding basin broke Wednesday afternoon, releasing millions of gallons into Coffee creek and then the Ouachita river. Officials reported no property damage beyond a central dam section and said Mossy lake facilities will handle the extra water. The earth filled dam stood 20 feet high and 12 feet wide at the top, built to hold 625 million gallons on a 254 acre site.
Edith Dianne Brown, eight, of Beaumont, is principal beneficiary of Edith Axline Marshall's estate estimated at over 2 million dollars. The Marshall will awards one fourth of principal at 25, a third at 33, and the remainder at 37. The girl, described as a tomboy, will not receive cash until later while her parents, including engineer R L Brown Jr, are connected to Magnolia refinery and local business.
In Decatur Mississippi authorities detained a 35 year old woman and a 30 year old man to investigate the death of John O Glenn a 44 year old merchant seaman found dead in his blazing car near Chunky Newton County Sheriff Hubert Valentine identified the pair as Mrs John O Glenn and Eugene Brown both from Chunky They said they had been at a drinking party the night before and returned home around 1230 a m before entering the house and leaving the car
A birthday party honored Mrs. Jerusha Jane Shanks of Rayville on her 107th birthday at St. Francis hospital. Attendees recalled Civil War memories and she recalled meeting outlaw Jesse James. She has two children, adopted a niece, and has two grandsons and seven great grandchildren.
Six Northeast State students sneaked into Southern college in Magnolia and stole the Mulerider mascot Maggie from the barn on a Wednesday night. The donkey was transported to Monroe in a trailer as the Northeast group claimed Maggie was a smart animal and waited to aid their team.
Former Chicago banker Henry J. Beutel testified before the U S Senate Banking Committee he donated seven thousand dollars from 1949 to 1952 to secure state funds for three banks later closed in 1953 by Orville E. Hodge now serving prison time. He named Jack A. Brown Lester Kiick and Ray Osterman as the treasurer’s office and Rock Island Bank officials connected to the payments. Beutel also linked Governor William G. Stratton to the scheme, saying he saw Stratton in the treasurer’s office during the period and that Osterman was involved with Stratton’s 1952 campaign.
In Stratford, Connecticut a 60 year old mother Florence Talbot and four of her children died in a six room home blaze believed caused by a kitchen oil burner. The victims were Patty 13 and sons Thomas 21 Robert 23 and Jack 28 who were found near the stairs or upstairs as dense smoke trapped them before they could reach the front door. The husband had died six months earlier and two other children lived elsewhere.
Louisiana Senator W M Rainach says segregation leaders from 11 Southern states will meet in Jackson Mississippi to plan a renewed campaign under the banner of the Citizens Councils. He notes the session follows an April New Orleans meeting and aims to coordinate a broad, violence-free push to counter Supreme Court school desegregation rulings.
An unidentified light colored young man robbed the Bank of Choudrant at noon and fled with cash. Deputy Forrest Jarvis halted pursuit on Louisiana Highway 13 in west Ouachita Parish. Bank manager W G Kelly said the robber wore a clothes sack and demanded money before fleeing in a red pickup.
Sen. Long said his two daughters left a Washington, D.C. school after it admitted a Negro pupil last year. He notes the girls have studied in Louisiana since September at the University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, contrasting with reports about officials sending children to Horace Mann School.
