In Terrazzano Italy police stormed a village school freeing 95 children and 4 teachers held for six hours by Arturo and Osvaldo Sampato who demanded two million lire. Both brothers were wounded as police breached the building after the hostage crisis escalated and the crowd tried to attack them.
In Spokane a barber shop scene ends with Settle Pearson, 32, grabbing a patron, only to discover the chair occupant is off duty patrolman Leroy G. Cumming Jr in uniform. Pearson is jailed on a disorderly conduct charge after a brief chase.
In New Mexico a pair of murderers, Jimmy C. Williams and Willie Carpenter, fled the Santa Fe prison after overpowering guard Jose Vigil. Police set roadblocks near Roswell, but the fugitives may have slipped into the area or vanished. Bloodhounds followed 18 hours of tracks toward Roswell before losing the scent.
In a decisive World Series game, Yogi Berra hit two homers driving in two runs for a 4-0 lead as New York Yankees face Brooklyn Dodgers. Bauer and Martin added earlier runs. Dodger defense held until late. The Houston college prank story follows.
Representatives of the city bus department and the bus committee of the city ways and means committee will meet at 3 p.m. Wednesday to review notes on a 10 day survey of the bus department. McSherry announced the transfer halt on October 1 to track travel and timing.

Secretary-manager John Birdsong noted ongoing cattle judging and a junior dairy grand champion named Tuesday, with 13 year old Bob Freeman of West Monroe High School 8th grade 4 H Club owner of the Jersey entry.
Mayor W L Howard says auto and heavy equipment dealers oppose the proposed one cent city sales tax without full facts. A Tuesday meeting of dealers led to a campaign to defeat the tax, with a committee appointed to lead efforts. The mayor rejected a tax limit on autos, citing unfair discrimination, and noted exemptions for out of town buyers would apply. The group seeks broader information from other Louisiana cities with city sales taxes.
The Ouachita parish police jury heard a request by trapper Bill Bayles to outlaw hunting raccoons with headlights and guns. He cited declining pelts and blamed summer hunting. a committee will study the issue for a future recommendation.
Paul Lemery, 28, was clawed to death Tuesday night after entering a 500-pound European bear's cage for a training session. His fiancée Shirley Rodriguez, 23, and employee Roland Racine tried to lure the bear away with a pike pole and broom. Bellefeuille then fired a .35 caliber rifle, shooting the bear between the eyes to end the attack.
New York reports say actress Margaret Sullavan remains missing as she failed to appear for a CBS television appearance. The case grew tangled with word she may have fallen ill and been hospitalized, then later surfaced as well and staying with friends. Conflicting notices had her flying to Switzerland to visit daughter Brooke, reportedly secretly married in Paris.
Democrats surged to the lead in Alaska general election returns with major gains for 30 of 39 offices and 21 of 24 Territorial House seats. Republicans led in six of nine Territorial Senate seats, one by just a single vote. National observers note Alaska trends can mislead on broader sentiment.
Four women on a planned 1400 mile motor trip to New York were injured in a car truck collision near Rayville Mississippi. They left home at 6 a m Wednesday to attend the National Association of Postmasters Convention. Hospitalized with cuts and bruises were Annie Fay Gambrell Ruth Stewart Alverne Drew and Miss Duffy. The truck driver was uninjured and the group considered continuing the trip by car.

Paula Hitler Wolf says she will publish memoirs to correct distortions about her family and brother Adolf. She lives quietly in Berchtesgaden, uses the Wolf name, and hopes to claim keepsakes once V Hitler is officially declared dead.
Gerald W. Chatham, a 50 year old Hernando attorney who gained fame as the prosecutor in the Emmett Till trial, died last night of a heart attack. He fell ill after attending a cotton gin dedication where he spoke. Chatham had 14 years in the 17th Judicial District and had served as state representative and county school superintendent. He chaired Hernando schools and was in a Hernando law firm.
