La Prensa reports 80 peasants died when a church in San Carlos Tabasco state was set ablaze by religious opponents. Those escaping were shot as doors were locked. two priests escaped to a ranch and later returned for relics. Authorities blamed religious persecution by state officials.
HATTIESBURG Miss Oct 10 Indications that an agreed policy of watchful waiting is to bear fruit in low rates for natural gas fuel supplied from the Jackson fields today when Mayor W S F Tatum announced intention of calling a conference of south Mississippi city officials here within the next few days The movement originating with the Hattiesburg executive several weeks ago won support of many city officials but the proposed meeting was postponed at the request of Jackson financial interests then engaged in surveys via pipeline from the fields there into south Mississippi.
McComb Mississippi report says excavation contractors halted gas distribution work until Monday after a Thursday strike by about fifty five workers seeking higher wages. Foreman refused any wage increase while strikers earned twenty cents per hour.
A 12-year-old girl misunderstood the bandit threat during a Brooklyn national city bank branch holdup. Edward Ling, the night watchman, faced two armed intruders as clerks and customers were moved to lines. The child ran to a firehouse after the armed men failed to seize her, leaving behind a bag of handcuffs.
Advices from Croydon airfield say the Columbia monoplane, en route from Harbor Grace to Croydon, landed at Tresco in the Scilly Isles off Cornwall. The islands lie about 300 miles from Croydon and 25 miles off Lands End. The monoplane would not continue to Croydon that night.
Meridan Miss Oct 10 John Speed 40 a Lauder dale county farmer was shot and killed near Savoy ten miles from as the result of domestic troubles. Speed was struck by a load of squirrel shot lodging in his side as he allegedly advanced on the home with threats against family members. Prentiss Speed 18, his step brother, was charged with the slaying and jailed by Sheriff M J Stone after surrender.
Orleans Parish grand jury returns indictments against seven persons tied to tax frauds by former city employees across the back tax and related departments. Thousands of dollars reputedly stolen.
United Press observes southern Brazil’s gauchos riding to battle as thousands of volunteers enlist under Gen. Miguel Costa. Troops, armed with Mauser rifles and sabers, board trains at Sant Ana do Livramento en route to Parana and toward Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Citizens bid them farewell as the revolt moves northward.
Secretary S. H. McClary is drafting steps after President Horuff urged the chambers of commerce to sponsor the project. He asks Tallulah Rayville Ruston Minden and Shreveport chambers to appoint two delegates to form a central organizing body. The plan envisions parish groups to carry out local beautification and maintenance of trees and shrubbery along the highway.
Mrs. Wat Pressley was killed when a radio aerial fell onto a high tension line in Canton North Carolina. J R Wright Jr 36 and Wat Pressley 35 were burned with a bare chance of recovery for Pressley. Mrs J R Wright was seriously shocked. Pressley was installing a radio with Wright assisting when the aerial sparked the line and threw him down. Pressley’s wife rushed to help and was killed as her clothes caught fire.
In Hot Springs Arkansas Jess Boulding a disabled Canadian veteran of the French flying service vanished from a hotel Monday. Police increased efforts to locate the former ace who arrived August 29 from Detroit and is said to have recently received a large pension check. Authorities are seeking a negro driver he engaged as a chauffeur. He is identifiable by a brass plate in place of bones in his right hand causing his left hand to be stiff with the palm outward.
Cleveland civic leaders respond to an unemployment surge as 7,000 gather at city hall to enroll in a $200,000 emergency bond program offering about 500 men three days weekly for 80 days. Mayor and council push for faster relief with potential expansion to $700,000.
Walter Clark, 70, planter and son of founder John Clark, died at his home in Clarksdale Miss today after months of ill health. He leaves widow Pauline Clark a Mississippi legislator daughter Mrs Joseph Derrell of New York two sons Alston Clark of Cornell New York and Phillip Clark a Mississippi A M College student and brother Charles Clark of Clarksdale. Brother Guy Clark editor of the Clarksdale Register died recently.
The News-Star reports Ouachita Parish is again a rendezvous for large beasts of prey. A panther seven miles south of Monroe was seen by A. M. Moore between the deep well on Gourd Bayou and the McGuire ranch. Moore says the animal stood its ground and its screams have been heard before. Tentative plans are being made.
The sale of the gas distribution system of Hattiesburg Meridian and Columbus to the Mississippi Public Service company was announced. The Mississippi Natural Gas Amory National Gas and Mississippi Gas Laurel will merge into the new company to operate the properties and develop Amory gas fields while building a line to Tupelo.
A temporary embargo on cotton entering New Orleans was lifted after 11 p m meeting of the dock board. 230000 bales were stored in state warehouses with room for 100000 more while private facilities held many more. Governor Huey P Long urged immediate expansion of facilities and declared no embargoes remain.
Flood stage readings show rising water on the Ouachita Camden station with a 4.7 rise in the 24 hour stage and a 6 rise in related measurements.
Governors mayors and business leaders across American cities looked to relieve workless distress by providing wages instead of soup kitchens. A United Press survey found New York Cleveland and Detroit creating funds to systemize unemployment relief through special bureaus.
Police and firemen in New Britain Connecticut contribute two percent of their salaries through Christmas to a relief fund. Mayor George A Quigley proposed the plan.
The census reported August 23 shows 2 508 151 people out of work and seeking jobs. Government contracts for public buildings this year total 43 million with 30 million more planned, bringing aid to employment to about 100 million. In New York state Governor Roosevelt urged creation of local employment committees.
E C McInnis director of the Mississippi Agricultural Service Department urged oil mills in Jackson to loosen prices and pay more for cotton seed. He said farmers suffer losses this year from low spirits and noted mills net about 16 16 a ton, a profit he believes should be cut in half.
Brighton Colorado October 10 a mother Mrs Grover Quick died today in a fire that trapped her 3 year old son Herbert after she carried him from the burning room and returned to fight the flames authorities say she was killed when the blaze spread and re trapped her in an adjacent room as she sought to save the child.
Senator Ransdell of Louisiana urged President Hoover to study possibilities for additional credit facilities to help cotton farmers survive next year's planting. He noted drought spared cane sugar and rice, but many cotton growers face near ruin from small crops and low prices, and he criticized current intermediate credit systems for requiring collateral.
After a nightlong search, John Billie Hanchey, 11, was found safe by his father riding a truck about ten miles south of Monroe on the Columbia road. He had left home to visit his grandmother in Clarks and said he had laid aside arithmetic work last night.
In New Orleans a 29 year old driver Dewey Richardson escaped serious injury after his car skid on a wet street and struck a woman pedestrian who was attempting to catch a street car. The vehicle then plunged into a canal. Richardson was booked for reckless driving and causing injury before the woman’s death.
Two unidentified white men were killed when eight gasoline tank cars derailed from Illinois Central freight No 3960 about 2 p m one mile east of Arcadia. Aged wreck area stretched about a hundred yards and others may have died. Victims were found crushed and entangled while the rest remained on a steep grade. Traffic likely to be halted late tonight as crew search the scene. Conductor J L Roan led the freight. engineer’s name not learned at 2 30 p m.
A two day convention of amateur radio operators from five states opened in Houston with about 200 delegates registered. Texas Oklahoma New Mexico Louisiana and Arkansas are represented. The opening session featured examinations for radio operators licenses.
Philadelphia report says Edward Sprankle of Carstairs and Company was killed by Adam Yakas of Upper Darby in the front entrance of the firm’s office. Yakas then shot himself and is hospitalized.
