Lake Success Oct 9 The United States pressed the United Nations to adopt a seven nation peace program to prevent small wars from becoming large. John Foster Dulles urged quick emergency sessions, peace observers, and U N collective action forces, with Britain France Canada the Philippines Turkey and Uruguay backing a Uniting for Peace resolution. Dulles warned fear of war erodes peace but noted the Korean crisis showed U N action can work amid limited veto and participation obstacles.
J Bardy Mitchell son of the late Mr and Mrs W R Mitchell died at 111 Austin Avenue West Monroe after a lingering illness. Funeral at Mulhearn Funeral Chapel Monday at 10 am with interment at Riverview Burial Park. Survived by wife the former Gertie Owens and son J Brady Mitchell Jr and brothers W L Clyde and J Wheeler Mitchell. He was a member of the W R Mitchell Company and later a planter and contractor.
Washington reports that Commander Charles C. Ralls of the Veterans of Foreign Wars accused the Agriculture Department of promoting a scheme to fly the United Nations flag with the American flag. The department denied the charge, saying the UN flag would not replace the U S flag, and noted support from about 80 groups including VFW for UN Day observances on October 24.
