Allied forces press a major push into German lines. Cambrai captured with prisoners. Haig says onslaught drives Germans toward the French border. Britons and Americans open a wide front from Cambrai to St. Quentin. Gouraud and Berthlot gains improve Franco American positions east of the Meuse.
All schools and places of amusement in New Orleans were ordered closed and public gatherings prohibited by state and city boards of health. Dr. Howling urged closing saloons and soda stands as nonessential to the public good as World War I era tensions rise and President Wilson faces responses to Germany.
President Wilson rejects armistice while German armies sit in invaded territory and asks the German chancellor to state if Germany accepts the peace principles, or negotiates only as dictated by military rulers. The move aims to expose sincerity and force clearer German choice, with Secretaries Lansing and diplomats presenting the German text and Swiss mediation.
