Arson probe underway after a Richwood High School fire caused about 10000 dollars in damage. Authorities say the blaze is under investigation with officials examining possible causes and circumstances surrounding the incident.
Israeli warplanes attacked a claimed terrorist base inside Jordan near Amman after dawn. Jordan reports two civilians killed and three wounded while Israel says its patrol killed five Arab saboteurs at Abdullah Bridge. No Israeli losses reported. Arab guerrillas raid Israeli territory overnight, hitting camps in Yevnael, Al Bakeia, Keshar and Um Saboun.
Kennedy lawyers ask Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court to close the planned inquest into Mary Jo Kopechne’s death to the press and public and to allow cross examination of witnesses. They argue the inquest would be an accusatory proceeding with possible criminal action.
Senate investigator testified that a corporation formed by top ranking sergeants ran NCO clubs in Vietnam and did 1.2 million in its first year. The operation pressed suppliers to do business through Mare dem Corp and linked a Vietnam unit to the clubs.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped below 803 at 1 p.m. while the 60 stock average fell to 281.8 at noon. Analysts warned a move under last year’s low could trigger deeper losses, with recovery views from S&P. The report also covers a rare submarine recovery drill and a severe arson fire at Richwood High School in Ouachita Parish.
The Agriculture Department estimates the 1969 cotton crop at 10.528 million bales of 500 pounds each, down from 11.088 million forecast in September and 10.948 million in 1968. The national yield is put at 450 pounds per acre, with state figures led by Texas 3,250,000 bales and 323 pounds per acre, followed by Mississippi 1,375,000 and 555, California 1,425,000 and 977, and Georgia 304 and 250,000.
