Deferment Granted in Car Theft Case for Kentucky Fugitive
William Steegal twenty two year old Kentucky fugitive pleaded guilty in federal court to a violation of the Dyer act and had sentencing deferred by Judge Ben C. Dawkins to allow probation authorities to complete their investigation. Steegal, moved from Baton Rouge where arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, allegedly stole a 1946 Ford coach at Opelousas on June twenty fifth and drove it to Louisville where it was recovered. Harold Henry of Louisville, said to assist Steegal, was arrested in that city and later sentenced to five years in a Shreveport federal court. Court records show prior terms for Steegal including three years on Dyer act charges in Ohio and another three years for house breaking and larceny. his conditional release was revoked in October 1946 and he served the remainder of that term until April 26 this year, sixty days before the car theft.
