Lighter metal may lengthen plane range

E Burke Wilford of Philadelphia and Hugh S. Cooper report a method to boost warplane ceilings by up to 5 000 feet using beryllium alloys. The research aims to lighten engines, fuselages, and wings improving range, with a two engine bomber gaining about 1 000 miles and a 40 000 foot ceiling rising to 45 000 feet. The ore is not produced commercially in the United States.
