Red Cross workers retrieve wounded rioters while chaos unfolds on the Castellana boulevard with nurses and crying children sheltered nearby. An extremist group is arrested as firing subsides.
Madrid dispatches report Oviedo the arsenal hub seized by rebels in a new surge against the government. Anarchists hold outskirts of Barcelona towns Matorell Sabadell Badalona as troops bombarded Gijon and other fronts. Casualties mount while government forces strike at rebel leaders in Barcelona and Oviedo.
In New York Supreme Court Justice John F. Carew ruled the remaining custody proceedings for 10 year old heiress Gloria Vanderbilt will be held privately. Dr. Stuart L. Craig testified as the first witness for Mrs Whitney while Mrs Vanderbilt and her mother Mrs Laura Kilpatrick Morgan attended the session.

In the Gulf of Smyrna two French destroyers Cassard and Guepard fired on by Turkish coastal batteries. Turkey called it a misunderstanding and protested alleged French territorial water violations. No fatalities reported, both sides expected an amicable settlement. French vessels then departed the area.
In Tyler Texas on October 8 the federal grand jury began deliberations in narcotic cases of three men after a weekend recess. One defendant is J A Miller 64 a Florida narcotic manufacturer accused of conspiring against the government and mailing over 58000 grains to fictitious doctors in east Texas. His attorney said Miller had a good record and acted in good faith.
Frank Turk Sr a 57 year old slave worker and contractor shot and killed two women Mrs Ora Lee Haley and Mrs T K Thompson then shot himself fatally ending his life The killings followed alleged marital difficulties parental interference and possible jealousy Mrs Haley was shot three times and died at 417 Grammont Street Turk used a .32 caliber revolver and the body was reported to police at 5 10 PM Coroner C L Mengis noted Mrs Haley as the first victim and critically wounded Mrs Thompson was taken in for treatment.
U S District Attorney William Mc Clanahan prepared an appeal after Federal Judge Harry B Anderson ruled price fixing under the lumber code illegal The decision could affect other NRA codes and was hailed by code enforcers as a potential end to price fixing if production drops Judge Anderson barred federal officials from prosecuting lumber dealers for selling below the set minimums.
The Mobile fishing schooner Peggy G arrived safely in Mobile harbor after a four day overdue voyage in the Gulf of Mexico. A coast guard patrol boat brought the vessel in after its auxiliary motor failed, leaving the crew to battle semi hurricane winds.

Supreme Court Justice Thomas W. Trenchard today charged a Hunterdon county grand jury to indict Bruno Richard Hauptmann for murder if the state shows sufficient evidence that Charles A. Lindbergh’s infant son was killed.

New York Oct 8 James M Fawcett counsel for Bruno Richard Hauptmann said today that he was prepared to present new evidence and arguments to prove Hauptmann’s innocence in the kidnapping case. He noted the defense would seek to overturn the conviction by introducing fresh material.

New Orleans police search for the killer of Richard Castle a former seaman whose body with four bullet wounds was found on the Mississippi river levee. A foreign revolver with two fired bullets was found beside him. Castle's Memphis mother said he had sent word he had 200 to 300 dollars and was headed back to Memphis. he once supervised a lumber mill in Delhi Louisiana.
The Agriculture Department reports an October 1 indicated cotton yield of 9,443,000 bales, up from 9,252,000 a month earlier and 9,195,000 two months prior. Production last year was 13,047,262 bales with state by state figures listed, and lint yield per acre estimated at 165.9 pounds.
Robert Allen Edwards plans to request a new trial in Luzerne county court claiming trial errors. The judge presides as Edwards faces a death penalty verdict for the murder of Freda McKechnie after a jury found him guilty of blackjacking and leaving her to drown during a lake swim. His defense cites alleged trial errors while Edwards, in his cell, reads a Bible given by his former sweetheart.

Detroit reports the St. Louis Cardinals exploded to victory behind pitcher Paul Dean over Lynwood Rowe as they beat the Detroit team 4 to 3 in game six, tying the World Series at three games apiece.
