U S cotton prices rose in New York trading as the latest market report lifted bids by about 2 to reach roughly 2.50 dollars per bale. The session reflected stronger demand and broader commodity strength amid trading activity.
In Rayville Louisiana a mass meeting of nearly one hundred Richland parish citizens denounced efforts to block carbon black permits. The resolution pressed state aid for the parish and urged gubernatorial candidates to state their stance on carbon permits. It cites one operated gas well and criticizes official delay amid flood hardships and tax needs.
Maplewood dealer Raymond Bloch plotted to kill waiter Michael Phoropulos and use the body to fake an insurance payout of 250000 for his wife, then elope with Anna Theim. Bloch lured Phoropulos to his showroom, attacked him with a hammer, but failed, then killed himself in New York. The scheme unraveled through Theim’s statements.
The Kimberly Clark mill collapse at Kimberly Wisconsin killed at least six and left five workers missing after an all night search by 900 workmen. The dead include Otto Krueger 20 Peter Van Lang 40 Robert Goeffard Kimberly John Fierz 88 and Arthur Brockman 40. Five missing men worked in the basement heater area when the collapse occurred. The injured number fifteen with two at St Elizabeths hospital in danger of death.
John L. Esser 39 president of Aurora Trust and Savings Bank was jailed on charges of embezzling 100000 dollars. He claimed the act came during an attempt to profit in the stock market as an audit uncovered discrepancies and he fled to Geneva before arrest. Directors covered the losses and kept the bank operating.
Welton Smith and North Boddie were arrested Friday afternoon on burglary charges for robbing Bob Haralson of 800 Wood Street. Smith confessed after questioning. Boddie claims innocence but admits being with Smith and spending some of the loot. The haul included a watch valued at 80 dollars a .38 revolver a .32 pistol two 1888 gold pieces and two silver dollars. The watch and pistol were recovered. other items are believed recoverable. George Connors says Remus plans to claim justifiable homicide after fearing plots to kill him. He cites alleged schemes across St. Louis Indianapolis Detroit Cleveland and other towns with hired gunmen and a $15000 payoff, thwarted by a friendly newspaper.
Cincinnati report notes Franklin L. Dodge and Edward T. Dixon denying Remus claims tied to his alleged motive for killing Imogene Remus. Dodge rejects linkage of his name to Mrs Remus and Dixon counters that Mrs Remus had no money except borrowed funds. Officials skeptical of Remus being penniless given his lavish spending and expensive lifestyle.
J M Bennett Jr of this city was arrested last night by Officers J M Hammens and J C Anders after police found a bottle of liquor in his car seat while he stepped into a business. He has prior city charges including drunk and disorderly driving while intoxicated and possession of home brew. Bond is being denied under the latest charge pending settlement of existing cases.
In Jackson Michigan on October 8 Associated Press reports Lindy handled questions with tact blushing at inquiries about his dating life. Reporters present included a red headed woman and several brunettes with no blondes in sight.
The Ouachita parish grand jury, in session since Monday, nearly completes investigations Friday afternoon and adjourns until Monday morning due to Judge J. T. Shell’s illness and Judge Percy Sander’s absence in Hot Springs. Court resumes Monday at 10 am with a noon report expected.
Three city officers raided John Wilson on Magnolia Street and seized a full still outfit along with about 30 gallons of corn mash. Wilson faced a charge of manufacturing whisky. Officers F K Ham L G Parker and Ed Harper participated in the operation.
At Yankee Stadium on October 8 the New York Yankees beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 to 3 to clinch the world baseball championship. Bill Combs drove in the tying and winning run in the ninth after a wild pitch by Milius with the bases loaded.
Box score notes Ruth homered for the Yankees and Collins had two bases hits. Miljus relieved Hill for Pittsburgh and allowed the decisive go ahead run after bases were loaded with none out. Rayburn Purvis a 17 year old rider was pinned beneath lumber when a small truck overturned on Rusto road at Steep Bayou hill. He suffered a severe leg fracture and body bruises with probable internal injuries while Ira Page the driver escaped unhurt. Fred Littleton and Monroe Page helped free them after the crash involving a Ford car driven by an unnamed operator.
Under darkening skies the fourth World Series game between the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates began with ambiguous visibility. Pitchers Wiley Moore and Men Hill mixed fastballs with other offerings as batters faced a likely era of fastballs. The national anthem was played before lineups and ground rules discussions with umpires at home plate.
