U S authorities report September unemployment at 4 percent, the highest in two years, with 365000 more jobless than August. Nonfarm payrolls show little net change due to auto model plant shifts as youth return to school is slower than usual.
Eugene F. Jones 78 longtime Monroe resident and World War I veteran died after a long illness at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral 10 am Thursday Covenant Presbyterian Church with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery. Survived by wife Effie Jones daughter Ange Gilad two brothers and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Virginia Eppinette of Moore Road Monroe marked a birthday over the weekend with celebration on Saturday The note also says she was asked to work but was reportedly holding out to take the day off latest reports do not confirm if she worked or not

A 23 year old West Monroe man John Keith Davis was found dead after a fall from a railroad trestle near Sterlington on the Ouachita River. Friends said they heard blasts from Thermatomic Carbor Plant around 2 30 to 3 00 a m and Davis called outr to join them but others did not cross the bridge. Davis served in the U S Army and was a West Monroe West Monroe High graduate and member of First Baptist Church. Funeral services are planned for Tuesday at 2 p m in Mulhearn Funeral Home West Monroe with burial details to follow.
Senate investigator testified Maj. Gen. Carl C. Turner used his provost marshal general role to obtain hundreds of firearms from Chicago and Kansas City police and Fort Bliss and sold many privately. He signed for weapons after retirement. some guns traced to Fayetteville, North Carolina. Approximately 700 weapons were obtained and about 500 remain unaccounted for.
