State rights leaders will gather in Monroe for an organizational meeting of independent electors. The 7 30 p m session in the Cameo Room of the Virginia Hotel will include Joseph D Waggonner IT chairman of the Fourth District group W M Rainach candidate of Summerfield Sheriff C E Hester candidate of Tallulah and Rep Vail M Delany chairman of the Fifth District group. The meeting is open to the public.
Vice President Richard M. Nixon campaigned in Rockefeller Plaza drawing about 23,000 supporters. He urged new tax policies to spur industry and create jobs while stressing national defense and civil rights. Nixon’s motorcade rolled Seventh Avenue to 38th Street as crowds lined streets and crowded into sidewalks.
Ten firms reported 100 percent participation in the United Givers Fund Drive in Monroe. Jurors who had been called for the opening of the trial were dismissed and told to return next Tuesday. Goldfine had been brought from Danbury to Boston after serving a 90 day contempt sentence for failing to provide income records. Indictments allege he evaded nearly $800,000 in personal and corporate taxes. The start of the trial had been delayed by a defense appeal to a higher court based on his condition.
In Evansville, Senator John F. Kennedy launches a vigorous critique of Vice President Nixon blaming GOP policy for mass job losses. He claims Nixon said you never had it so good while touring distressed areas. Kennedy argues Nixon ignores economic reality as Indiana bets on the election.
A 17 year old German youth named Roland Hoffman surrendered after a gun siege in Amberg. He wounded six people in a frenzied shooting after earlier being given a suspended nine month term for setting fire to the Amberg Synagogue. Police said a family dispute preceded the attack.
President Eisenhower attended the National Day of Prayer service at the National Presbyterian Church with about 35 others. Rev John W Edwards prayed for a blessing to help him meet the great challenges of the day and the threat of total destruction over every word.
Par ish School Board adopts 4.452 million budget after trimming 180 thousand from proposal. City School Board approves 2.885 million, leaving small surpluses of 4 thousand and 8 thousand respectively. Officials warn of potential danger if unexpected costs arise.
