Lisbon report notes Revolutionists gain, king flees, loyal troops join revolt as streets cheer for a republic. Madrid says no direct contact with Lisbon, wireless only from Santander. telegraph cut suspected to delay republic announcement.
Paris reports, via Portuguese sources, that King Manuel has taken refuge on the Brazilian battleship Sao Paulo. Dr. Jose De Alpoim, ex minister of justice, calls the king wise but poorly advised by palace clerics as liberals praise the expulsion of friars and confiscation of convents and monasteries and other valuable properties.
Atlanta October 5. Factions aim to bolt the recent Democratic primary and shift votes from ex Governor Howe Smith. Only two regular tickets remain for state officers, the Democratic ticket led by Hoke Smith and the Socialist ticket led by C O Brown. Bolters led by Tom Watson push independent tickets bearing Governor Joseph M Brown’s name. Democrats say the regular ticket stands little chance of defeat.
Tampa telegram from Governor Albert W. Gilchrist states he will not be a candidate for the United States Senate to succeed the late Napoleon B. Broward under any circumstances. Broward’s nomination by the Democrats is treated as essentially an election.
President W G Lee of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen released a mailed questionnaire to lodges of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Order of Railway Conductors. It seeks candidates for Congress and State Legislatures to state their positions on legislation affecting the three railroad unions.
112,000 and their friends claim strong turnout to influence votes on railroad labor issues. Candidates will be asked about compensation for injured workers, employer liability without contributory negligence, boiler inspections, compulsory arbitration, obstruction and clearance near tracks, anti injunctions, fraternal magazines privileges, and crew size limits with tenure rules.
General advances in freight rates from New Orleans to north west and east were set to take effect November first but the Interstate Commerce Commission has suspended them for 120 days while it studies the propriety of the increases. Washington reports the action and notes the suspension by order of the commission.
