Warnings from the American Oil Men’s Association predict higher gas costs this winter and into spring due to lower production and wiped‑out surplus. Indirectly, independents face extinction if market mood remains low, with prices unlikely to drop.
Gasoline is sold in Dallas today at less than distilled water. Several stations charge nine cents a gallon while most charge ten cents. Distilled water costs ten cents a gallon in five gallon bottles.
A strong earthquake shock was felt last night with no serious results. On Tuesday 14 severe shocks were recorded and five more on the seismograph, all counter vibrations of little importance.
Bellevue toxicologist Dr. Alexander O Goettler reported poisonous corrosive sublimate in Mrs. Gertrude Gorman Webb’s vital organs but not in death-causing quantities. The grand jury will review the toxicology at White Plains after a conference with officials, as two relatives sought Gov. Smith’s intervention.
Friends of Mrs. Gertrude Gorman Webb press for arrest of a material witness as developments unfold this afternoon. Dr. William J. Meyer, who attended Webb, says she named three people including him in statements about months of events before her death. He dismisses allegations he emptied bottles and claims a group in White Plains and New York City seeks to besmirch his name.
At Portland Oregon the American Federation of Labor began a policy focused convention with committees reviewing resolutions. Key issues include political participation and shifting from craft based to industry based organization under the one big union model. Three convict murderers trapped inside a two story brick dining room at the western Kentucky state penitentiary after killing one guard and wounding three others in an escape attempt. National Guardsmen were stationed at vantage points around the prison as the tense standoff continued.
Paris reports Chancellor Stresemann seeks a smaller cabinet and faces opposition seen as paving the way to a civilian dictatorship with martial law. He has not formed a new ministry as of noon. The resignation came after socialist ministers withdrew over the eight hour law dispute.
In Chicago Illinois on October 4 a suit for 1332 was filed by a men furnishing firm against Joseph Leiter grain operator claiming he bought 111 pairs of silk hose priced at 12 dollars each. Leiter says he merely paid for and wore them, discovering the purchase only after 28 days.
In Chicago on October 4 two Black men were named in a true bill charging conspiracy after Mrs Helen Elwood Stokes testified before the grand jury. She accuses hotel heir W E D Stokes of efforts to damage her reputation via forged affidavits and photographs connected to a New York divorce suit. Her grand jury appearance coincides with a New York hearing set for next Monday.
Representatives from four Boy Scout sub districts within the Monroe Louisiana area will meet tomorrow at 4 PM in the Monroe Chamber of Commerce. Field Representative Shriner of the National Council, who organized the movement here, will outline final measures to complete the Monroe Council and plan growth with district leaders. Ruston has contributed half the funding with T L James as chairman and Rev S E McFadden as vice chairman. Bastrgp held a staff meeting as it assembles another sub district with a delegate set for the Friday Monroe caucus.
Calcasieu grand jury in Lake Charles reports cognizance of allegations against the Calcasieu judicial jury commission and school system. It says witnesses were summoned to a DeQuincy mass meeting of about 200 citizens, many under misapprehension of its purpose, and finds no foundation for the accusations.
At the Kentucky state penitentiary in Eddyville three convicts locked in the dining hall barricaded themselves after an attempted escape. Twenty-five National Guardsmen and thirty-five guards laid siege with two machine guns until about noon, exchanging fire with the fugitives who fired twelve shots.
Paducah, Ky. William M. Gilbert a guard at Western Kentucky State Penitentiary Eddyville died in Paducah today He is the third victim of the prison riot and confirms the fatalities from the uprising.
In Eddyville Kentucky a 30 hour prisoner siege by three convicted murderers continues as state guards and officials seek a safe dislodging plan. Food shortages loom with the dining hall held by rebels and emergency bread supplies sought from Paducah. Prisoners outside the hall are confined to cells.
London Oct 4 The new German cabinet will have four ministers. Dr Stressemann will be chancellor and foreign minister, Herr Minoux economy and finance minister, Dr Otto Gessler home affairs and defense minister, and Heinrich Brauns labor and food minister.
