A Savannah couple's fishing trip ends in tragedy when James H. Price drowns after his motor stalls. Norman L. Davis, price's friend, dives in to help and also drowns as they are swept farther from shore. Mrs Price, unable to swim, is rescued on a sand bar as searchers recover neither body.
Justice William O. Douglas, a leading liberal on the U S Supreme Court, was badly hurt in a horse accident in the Cascade mountains near Yakima. He sustained 13 broken ribs and a punctured lung, with doctors saying recovery possible though pneumonia risk remains. Mrs Douglas and daughter Mildred rushed to his side as he receives transfusions and tests at a Yakima hospital.
A westbound City of San Francisco streamliner derailed near Ames at 3 a.m. killing Ernest Riggs, 35, of Oakland on his honeymoon. Five cars left the rails. one coach ripped open and four others injured. Most passengers headed to California. transfers arranged.
Sponsors of a housing bill agreed to strip out a controversial section authorizing up to 1 billion dollars in 50 year loans to cooperatives and non profits. The measure moves to debate this week with the clause to become a separate bill next year.

Mrs Francis Marion Shipwash 24 Gibsland and Walter Childs 44 Minden were “much improved” after critical wounds from nine shots fired by Mrs Shipwash's husband in Monroe. John Shipwash 59 is jailed on aggravated assault as police gather statements. Childs had linked up with the couple for a wrestling trip and was staying with his niece at Walnut Street. The shooting occurred after they left a Green Mill booth and returned to a car.
New Orleans Oct 3 Colombian seamen aboard the A R C Blas de Lezo quenched a fire at the Anchor Inn, alerted the neighbors, and saved 14 month old Leo Schouest Jr from poison paste. Captain Augusto Porto and Lieutenant Hernando Barriga led 60 crew members in combating the blaze and preventing wider damage.
At Ontario California a racing passenger train struck a U S air force bus at a crossing killing 17 of 22 aboard. Eleven were March Air Base personnel. five were Ontario Hostess Club members. one chaperone, Mrs Ruby McLaughlin, 45. Survivors included Omega and Marquita Pearce, twins from Ontario. The train traveled 70 mph. no one aboard the train was hurt.
In Shanghai on October 3, the Flying Trader and sister ships Flying Independent and Flying Clipper were halted near the Yangtze mouth by Nationalist gunboats while attempting to load 125 Korean refugees and 10,000 tons of aid. The U.S. and Britain disavowed the blockade, with the ships ordered to return to Shanghai or dispose of cargo. Koreans forced their way aboard as tensions rose over postwar relief to Korea.
District Attorney Edwin L. Brewer announced charges of attempted murder against C. C. Blackwell 45 after he shot A. C. Copeland 53 in his bed Saturday night in Shreveport La. Bond was set at 5000 by Judge Robert J. O Neal. Copeland, a building supply firm manager, was wounded in the head and was in a sanitarium in a semi conscious state. Police offered no motive for the attack.
