A groundbreaking ceremony for Central Baptist Church is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. Rev. R. L. Ross of Sterlington Baptist Church will be the inspirational speaker. The event features a musical program and outlines plans to build the church auditorium with offices and classrooms.
The City of Monroe will open bids in Mayor Benoit’s office at City Hall on Wednesday at 10 a m for White Way lighting on DeSiard Street. The project has been delayed by war aftereffects and light plant expansion, but if bids are satisfactory the project may proceed with poles already available.
Supt. D. Curtis Seamon of the Louisiana Training Institute marks three years in office on October 1, 1947. The inmate population fell from 152 to 112, with 87 a year ago, due to improved welfare methods, Big Brother paroling program, and religious support. The institute reports strong academics through the 12th grade, athletics with local high schools, a successful farm program, and a modern canning plant that preserved 23,660 pounds of vegetables this season. The Reno report confirms a secret divorce of concert violinist Yehudi Menuhin from his Australian-born wife. The judge in Carson City indicated he did not rule on the matter, as details remained pending. The revelation comes from Mrs Menuhin's attorney after a court session.
Attorney H. H. Atkinson said Judge Guild and County Clerk LeGate sealed the record saying disclosure would come when ripe. Menuhin and his wife live on a Nevada ranch with two children Samira and Kory while property rights were settled in a sealed agreement. The Menuhins wed in London on May 26, 1938.
