Oklahoma City Oct 3 Opponents of Gov J C Walton scored a sweeping victory in a landmark referendum paving the legislature to pursue impeachment against the governor. Early counts show a heavy turnout and a broad defeat of several other constitutional amendments.
Mississippi's first white woman moonshiner was sent to Parchman farm today. Mrs. Sarah Strong of Vicksburg was moved to the state penitentiary after an eighteen month sentence, following affirmation by the state supreme court. Two other white women remain incarcerated: Mrs. May Morris for murder and Mrs. Elizabeth Lott for aiding an escape.
Invitations went out from the White House to the governors of 48 states for a conference with President Coolidge on October 20 to discuss law enforcement including prohibition immigration and anti narcotic statutes. Governors travel from West Baden Indiana after their international conference and arrive in Washington the next day.
The Roosevelt will be the name of the Hotel Grunewald on and after November 1. It will be the first hotel of that name in the country. The magnificent main building to be erected on Baronne street will also bear the title.
Attorney General Daugherty issues an opinion explained by Comptroller Dawes saying national banks may not engage in branch banking even inside their home cities. They may operate teller windows for deposits and checks but cannot make loans or buy securities at those locations.
The Mississippi state tax commission boosted assessments in 38 counties by 17,924,214 dollars with 15 million on real estate and 2 million on personal property. A special session was convened to hear county protests while Coahoma Humphreys Quitman and Smith counties each topped a million in increases.

Birmingham report says state armed forces prevented Jefferson County grand jury from visiting the Banner mines pit on September 1. The jurors sought to uncover law violations and identify mutineers, but disclosed conditions requiring action and described the mutiny as the worst ever in Alabama coal mining prisons.
Police found a headless and nude white man in the girls dressing room of a city pool on the south side. A blood trail led to the Monongahela river bank and investigators believe the head was tossed into the river.
In a Chicago dance hall Mrs Josie Caccavale used a revolver to force men to dance with three wall flowers. Philip La Rose fled through a window when threatened. Police arrested the dancer who claimed the gun was to ensure the ladies enjoyed themselves.
Six occupied cities including Duesseldorf Essen Pormund Witten Hoerde and Bochum have recognized the legality of the Franco Belgian Ruhr occupation by agreeing to contribute their share to the sustenance expenses. Municipalities had previously refused citing Versailles treaty objections.
In New York a petition for an equity receiver was filed against J M Gidding and Company importers and retail dealers in women's apparel with liabilities listed at 1 500 000. Creditor Charles H Mears claimed 10 000 in promissory notes and said the firm is solvent with quick assets near liabilities and slow assets about 1 000 000.
Eureka Calif Oct 3 A wealthy Lodi butcher confessed to killing a stranger on his ranch on September 12 setting fire to a stack near his automobile to destroy the body and fleeing to enable his wife to collect life insurance money. He said he picked up the man at a free employment agency and killed him at the ranch then drove the body and burned the car before walking toward Sacramento. The confession followed hours of questioning by Assistant District Attorney and Sheriff. The wife, an expectant mother, is in serious condition and unaware Kels is alive.
Mrs. Margaret P. Johnstone wife of a former New York judge told the Westchester Webb death grand jury what she knew about the society woman’s death at the Westchester Biltmore. She kept a diary of events before Mrs. Webb’s death and left it with the jury. County Attorney Fitzgerald announced evidence of bichloride of mercury in Mrs. Webb’s viscera by toxologist Dr. Alexander Goettler.
