In southern Illinois a 19 year old ex convict James L. Scott shot and wounded a Fairview Heights police officer after taking him hostage in a wooded area. The officer Ralph Buddy Brumley, 26, was listed in fair condition at a Belleville hospital. A woman, Ann Morgan of Belleville, said she and Scott were in the patrol car after an earlier accident at Illinois 161 and U S 50. Police surrounded the area with dogs and a helicopter.
