The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered a broad inquiry into freight rates across many destinations. A New Orleans conference on December 17 will set the scope and summon representatives from cooperatives, cotton shippers, and railroads plus state commissions.
Delegates at the thirty first annual Southern Association convention in Jackson Mississippi discussed scholastic requirements for athletes and how to regulate absences due to sports. Several hundred delegates from colleges and secondary schools in three states attended the opening sessions. The executive committee includes J H Kirkland Vanderbilt A D Dinddie S J McCallie L T Ker and A A Murphree.
City registrar B D Hodges reports 237 qualified voters and property tax payers in Monroe. Registration for the January 1927 waterworks bond election closes at 2 PM Monday December 18, thirty days before the vote, with the deadline only nineteen days away.
Arthur R. Gould Republican senator from Maine wins a special election to fill the seat after Bert M. Mernard’s death. Gould defeats Fulton J. Redman Democrat by about 48 000 votes with 79 582 to 31 540 amid a two thirds turnout in September’s election. Gould’s term ends 1931 and the balance of the new Senate is 48 Republicans 47 Democrats and 1 farmer labor. Redman had charged Gould spent beyond legal limits to gain the nomination.
Mrs. Mary M. Lockett Millsaps a longtime Monroe resident dies at 75 after a month illness at her daughter P. M. Atkins home She was native of Virginia married to Uriah Millsaps a notable banker and merchant In widowhood she lived with her children at Old Trenton burial at Riverview with services at Atkins home led by Rev. Wallace Clift She is survived by three children nine grandchildren and one great grandchild plus sister E B Batte

Authorities scour Kickapoo Valley as Erdman Olson, 18, faces a first degree murder warrant amid the disappearances of Clara Olson, 22, and Erdman from Gale College. Letters suggest a possible self harm motive. investigation follows their May meeting and September letters.
Warren G. Giles president of the Syracuse club of the International league announced the selection of Monroe Louisiana as the spring training camp site during a Syracuse New York report dated November 30.
Ouachita parish police jury met in special session at 10 am in the parish courthouse to adopt the 1927 budget with little change from the current year. A resolution authorized a $100 donation to the proposed Ouachita parish tuberculosis home, payable upon assurance of the home.
Governor Henry L. Whitfield of Mississippi had his left leg amputated above the knee at Baptist Hospital in Memphis after a malignant bone disease from a tennis knee injury. The 58 year old leader recovered from anesthesia and was reported to react in splendid style by attending physicians.
For the second year in a row the Manchester November Handicap was called off due to fog and rain. The feature race of the meet was to be run Sunday with eighteen thoroughbreds declared in readiness to race.

The November district review reports 1926 cotton in the Sixth Federal Reserve district at 9.7 percent above 1925 with a national crop up 11.3 percent to 17 918 000 bales. District yields forecast include corn wheat oats and potatoes rising while tobacco holds near last year. Georgia tops district cotton at 1 490 000 bales with Mississippi leading overall at 1 830 000.

Edgar Lee Scroggins, 30, an oil plant employee near Tullos, La., died instantly when a boiler exploded at about 8 p.m. He was alone on night shift. The blast wrecked the boiler. Scroggins suffered a broken neck and fractured legs. Body sent to morgue in Alexandria. he leaves a wife and child in Leesville. He had been moving his family to Tullos. The lease was in section 36-10-1E, four miles southwest of Tullos.
