Senator John McClellan Dies in Little Rock Home
Arkansas Democrat and longtime U.S. Senator John McClellan was found dead by his wife at about 6 30 a.m. in their Little Rock apartment. A 35 year veteran, he had announced last week he would not seek re election when his sixth term ended January 3 1979. He had served in public office for half a century and led the Senate Appropriations Committee since 1972. McClellan previously headed the permanent Investigations subcommittee for 18 years and was known as a relentless watchdog on government wrongdoing. He had a pacemaker implanted last summer and said health would not affect his retirement decision.
