A 27-year-old truck driver from Yuma County Arizona was charged with first degree murder in the September 29 slaying of William David Carpenter, a 52-year-old San Diego hearing aid salesman. Nall admitted and described a Hwy 800 incident near Motuvik Arizona, then led authorities to the body found off the road. Carpenter’s mother in Alabama reported he was en route to visit her.

Joe Wilson, manager of the United Dollar Store in Monroe, is named manager of the year among United Dollar managers in Arkansas Louisiana Mississippi and Texas for leadership enthusiasm and cooperation.
Nathan Messer, owner of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, father of Mrs. San Kohn of Albany New York and Mrs. Barry Levin of Canonsburg Pennsylvania, died November 29. He had retired for years and was a member of a Pittsburgh church. Burial was at Red Cemetery in Melroseport Pennsylvania. Surviving children include Leonard Messer of Pittsburgh and other daughters and son based in nearby towns.
Funeral services for the Rev. David Byrd 78 of Baton Rouge are set today at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Winnsboro. Officiating will be the Rev. Joule Millers. Burial follows at Forrest Cemetery under the direction of First National Funeral Home of Winnsboro. Survivors include his widow Maude Byrd, two sons Byrd of Harrisville, Alma Byrd of Gulfport, two daughters Thelma Williston and Diotis Nichols, a brother Charles Byrd of Delhi, a sister Alice Bear of Mansfield, and many grandchildren.
A Bastrop man died instantly when his car veered into oncoming traffic on U S Highway 190 after a broadside collision. Felicia Pinsonat 32 of Plaquemine and others were taken for treatment. autopsy to determine heart condition as a possible cause. Funeral plans pending.
A large Yule parade in the area drew about 12,000 spectators as the Santee Wonderland event opened the holiday season. Held Monday, the parade featured floats, riding chairs, bands, clowns, and uniformed groups led by director David Retherford with Chamber of Commerce sponsorship. Winners included Hon Commercial division and Blooming Garden Club entries with multiple local sponsors and officials from Monroe and Rayville in attendance.
Miss Turnely retired school teacher died Monday night at a local nursing home after an extended illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and under Peters Funeral Home of Monroe. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Monroe and is survived by two sisters Inez Purnely Pate and Drene Purnely Breach both of Monroe, and brother George W. Turnely of Amarillo Texas.

A year old man from Monroe was sent back to Franklin Parish jail and charged with two counts of auto theft and two counts of burglary. He allegedly stole from stores in Gilbert and used a car, with witnesses noting the pattern of shopbreaks before his capture near Monroe.
Acting Judge James Hobbs in Monroe city court found Charlie Oglesbee guilty on four counts with fines totaling 525 dollars plus costs. He sentenced for DUI, damage to city property, improper brakes, and following too closely, while multiple others were fined for DUI and related offenses.
