A labor federation expresses support for the Boulder Dam proposal and calls for safeguards for the public. One dissenting ballot was cast at the meeting outlining reservations about the proposal.
The American Federation of Labor convention with one dissent endorsed building Boulder Dam with strong safeguards and federal regulation of water distribution for domestic irrigation and power. It also backed a rigid inquiry into the Steamship Vestris disaster and urged enforcement of maritime laws while defending free speech and assembly.
Clyde A. Vaughan a 36 year old former Birmingham police officer awaiting trial for the murder of Nancy Rochell and wounded in the same mysterious shooting died early today in Birmingham. Police had puzzled over the October 13 crime in an exclusive boulevard sedan case.
Count Folke Bernadotte, nephew of King Gustaf of Sweden and Swedish horse guards lieutenant, will wed Miss Estelle R Ville, heiress to about 25 million dollars of the asbestos fortune, at Pleasantville New York. The wedding is projected to cost about 750000 dollars. He plans to move to Stockholm and live in a flat, expecting to own a radio, electric refrigerator, and a vacuum cleaner like other people.
France on court advice refused to honor the US extradition request for H. M. Blackmer a missing Teapot Dome witness. He faces an indictment charging false income tax returns in Denver Colorado. The court ordered his immediate release with the opinion sent to the foreign affairs ministry. The attorney general argued the offense was primarily political.
A Vestris steward testified at a U S steamboat inspection hearing that he escaped in a lifeboat less than a third full and was threatened with violence when suggesting rescuing passengers. He said 15 men rode the boat and all but him were black firemen. He claimed others blocked any effort to help.
The Press Association reports at St James Palace that the Prince of Wales has not been summoned to England amid the kings illness. Official word confirms he has not been recalled and remains abroad.
United States Senator James A. Reed told the Mississippi valley association to lobby Congress as businessmen for a major public investment in barge lines. Robert P. Lofton faces the gallows in Pike county jail Magnolia Mississippi next Friday after the U S supreme court refused to review. Governor Gilbo declines to commute unless urged by Circuit Judge E J Simmons and District Attorney F W Hewitt who say the law must run its course. Lofton has twice escaped and his case has seen multiple reprieves since 1926.
In Mexico City the chamber of deputies defended President-elect Hoover and Ambassador Morrow after Labor member Laborde denounced Hoover’s goodwill tour. Leaders and deputies praised the Americans, with Melchor Ortega noting Morrow’s work earned national sympathy and expressing hope for Hoover’s future visit.
A district court hearing on the ownership of a Jersey heifer drew about 20 witnesses and a large audience. Judge Percy Sandel reserved judgment as both sides presented strong, conflicting cases and the animal remains in custody of plaintiff C. D. Spillers pending final decision.
Leonard Flo of Ann Arbor Michigan 26 year old former army and air mail pilot set out from Walkerville Ontario at 11 07 pm in a Spartan biplane aiming for Havana in 18 to 20 hours covering about 1800 miles via Dayton Cincinnati Atlanta Tampa and Key West before crossing to Camp Columbia Havana He finances the flight himself and carries 225 gallons for a 100 mph 24 hour range.
Homer Hood of Haynesville Louisiana convicted of manslaughter for failing to seek medical help for his eight year old son who died after illness. Hood belonged to a religious sect that opposes medical treatment. Jury indicted him soon after. He faces sentence by Judge John S Richardson.
Bandits smashed a safe at the Lambrecht creamery in Chicago and took about $7,000. About 50 men rumored involved, but 30 employees could not confirm numbers. Robbers entered through doors and windows shouting, forcing 24 drivers and six office staff to the floor as they fled.
Baton Rouge November 27. Governor Huey P Long names a Louisiana flood control committee with James P Butler as chairman and Ira W Sylvester as a member. The panel includes W H Sullivan and J O D O Keefe along with P M Atkins to oversee the state's federal flood control program. The governor earlier won approval from the state board of liquidation which set aside 50000 for the committee.
Boy Scout drive progress lags with only 65 gained in a day toward an $11,000 goal. Saturday’s tally reached 7,163 and Monday closed at 7,288, the smallest daily rise since the drive began a week ago. The effort seeks broader support to fund Boy Scout activities in the area for the coming year.
In Baton Rouge on November 27 three inmates seized a state penitentiary locomotive at Camp G Angola and fled the yard. Locomotive engineer Roy Delcore planned the escape with Bill Stone and W A McGee hiding in the tender before abandoning the train. Delcore, Stone, and McGee had varying terms for manslaughter forgery robbery and related crimes. McGee had previously escaped and was recaptured.
Fresno Chronicle reports Lee Schoenhair and John Gogtelmetti failed in an endurance flight after 42 hours and minutes aloft at Helm airport 40 miles west of Fresno. With 90 gallons of gasoline remaining they could not reach a new record, needing 24 more hours to set one.
Western Europe faced widespread floods as a four day gale drove in the sea flooding lowlands from Belgium to Frisian Islands. Antwerp and Ghent areas faced breached dykes water and gas pipe damage with several missing. Ostend Bergen op Zoom and Rotter dam saw inundation as dyke walls failed and ships were halted. Authorities frantically worked to repair breaches and evacuate residents amid rising rivers and wrecked ships.
Laura Moore, a local woman, killed her husband’s lover and stabbed her husband after discovering the affair. The rival died, the husband is seriously wounded, and the assailant surrendered to the sheriff.
Ouachita parish lists Neal W. McHenry as one of seven master farmers recognized by The Progressive Farmer. Other honorees include Neal McHenry Monroe, R. T. Douglas Gilliam, George L. Gayden Curley, Robert S. Pesson New Iberia, William Poe Newellton, Wallace J. Thibodeaux Houma, and W. Warner Lecompte.
